Oops, my apologies! Can I plead ADHD and distraction? Apparently I can't keep focus for the length of a thread.

This isn't an us good you bad, it just demonstrates the importance of public heath programs, and the impact they can have.

newsGP - Australia set for world-first cervical cancer elimination Vaccination programs have played a key role, and GPs remain β€˜instrumental’ in boosting screening rates to reach the 2035 target.

So much suck on so many levels. Ironically just after reading that there were no cases of cervical cancer diagnosed in under 25 years in Aus for the first time since recording started in 1982.

Wow, that is absolutely unreasonable but also, how much? In Australia it is free for eligible people (includes teens) but if you aren't eligible, it costs (translates AUD to USD) ~$130.

They do research this! It's actually hundreds of different respiratory viruses, just different enough that you don't get cross immunity. And people go out with them and don't mask and spread them generously.

did anybody else in the US watch The Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries and feel a visceral jolt when the whole pilot turns out to hinge on the lack of safe access to abortion in 1920s Australia and the women characters’ rage about it

like β€œoh wow okay this show was NOT made in this country”

a man in a suit is holding three boxes of pizza . Alt: a happy man in a suit is holding three boxes of pizza, startled after walking into chaos and fire, much like the feeling I get any time I consider our broader reality. Pizza is nice, though.

I mean, they aren't wrong, I guess, but why stop with AI?

Authors warn AI copyright exception a 'free pass' for Big Tech to steal work The Productivity Commission's interim report on AI has triggered a fierce backlash from the literary community.

This happened years ago in crisis time (2 weeks), but there has to be a German word for being horrified but also unsurprised by a statement revealing hypocrisy.

The Productivity Commission out there saying that we can improve productivity by not paying workers.

And you can't build in variables that you don't know about. We do not have a complete understanding of all biochemical pathways, cell functions, etc.

I just did the googling, fois gras is a specific type of pate, solely goose liver. The usual pate on bahn mi is pork, but chicken liver pate is often used as n alternative. Some fancy versions out there use foie gras.

There's a joke here about chopped liver, but I'm distracted by a bahn mi craving.

A lot of bahn mi (s - no idea how to pluralise that) have pate on them. Not "upper class" food at all.

Nice discussion, some thoughts:

I read romance because I know it'll have a happily ever after / happy for now, if they don't have that they aren't a romance genre.

Fantasy always had sex scenes, historically there was a good chance they'd be icky, or r*pey. Would love warnings about that.

Absolutely, the roll out of vaccines had a huge impact on child mortality. Prior to that, though, efforts in public sanitation, clean water and food safety already improved survival, especially in infants.

Safety laws are written in blood. Defunding the regulatory bodies will kill people.

Griffith had a bit more of a drop, at -1.9%, but they still got 32.7% of the vote, and if LNP hadn't lost so many voters to ALP, again they would be back in.

I find the narrative "Greens were comprehensively rejected" weird. I vote in Brisbane and the primary Greens vote stayed remarkably stable. It's the shift in LNP (and Ind) to ALP that made the difference. This certainly proves that Greens voters were pretty happy, good work Stephen Bates.

That seems like a great plan. In cooler weather I use a travel mug without the lid, it holds temperature much better than normal mugs.

Over the last few hot and too humid months, my cold drinks just sit collecting condensation and dripping on the desk.

When I work from home I like to make my morning tea with leaves in a ~2 cup pot. While it is brewing, I boil water again, so that after I pour the first cup I can refill it and let it steep again until lunchtime when I remember I did that, and wonder if it's worth microwaving the over-brewed tea.
