Last weekend was such a great time to hike with a friend and the dog. Granite Creek Basin offered excellent salmonberries, blueberries, whistling marmots, and snow to cool our seltzers. I love Alaska summer. #alaska

Corporation for Public Broadcasting to close after funding cut, in blow to local media The Corporation for Public Broadcasting will shut down its operations after the loss of federal funding, the nonprofit said on Friday, in a blow to local TV and radio stations that have relied on its grants for nearly six decades.

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) will shut down after losing federal funding due to a $9 billion cut by the Republican-controlled House. Created in 1967, it distributed funds to NPR, PBS, and over 1,500 local stations.

This does not make America great in any way. 🤬

It’s foolish to build a second crossing below a 110 year old dam if the goal is infrastructure resilience. The dam could take out the new bridge and the hospital. The report says they weren’t aware of the risk early in the process and haven’t received FOIA responses to allow dam risk assessment.

Amidst tough public broadcasting news and outlooks in recent days, we can still celebrate the work we did and usher this last season of stories out with pride. Four new episodes - eight new stories! - of Molly of Denali are airing this week on PBS and they’re almost entirely Indigenous-written! 💪🏽

In response to the Congressional gutting of public broadcasting, KMXT, the Kodiak public radio station serving a community of ~5,000 people, raised $125k in just one day.

My Fox News loving dad never asked why I chose to get a journalism degree. He never doubted me when I found work in public television & radio. He became an NPR listener & donor.

He didn’t live long enough to go full MAGA, but I’m sure he would be pissed at the Republicans today.

My daughter returned from a week of Christian Bible camp. Her cabin won the lip syncing contest.

They dressed up and sang “I’ve got a dream” from Tangled. The star of the show was a counselor, a large bearded man, dressed as Rapunzel - all in full drag. Gender doesn’t define youth.

Yeah, those were the golden days of excess capacity on most of the boats in the winter. It was marketed like the AK Air PFD sales. You could walk on, or you could make a reservation. I think there was a fee for a “no show” reservation. It also gave discounts for a vehicle and cafeteria food.

This can’t be serious. Arson?

It’s started in 2001 and happened every winter for at least 4 years. It was a real help for locals who travelled for medical, shopping and family/friends visits. I lived in Haines at the time and bought it to come to Juneau frequently.

I keep reminding myself that all the rain is better than…uh…oh yeah, fire and smoke. This year is endless Juneau September. Hardly any snow last winter, no sunshine or warmth this summer and now we are on the cusp of autumn. I’m not depressed, you are.
