27.01.2026 19:37 β π 0 π 1 π¬ 0 π 0"Deborah Borda, who has served as president and chief executive of the New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, said the upheaval confronting Noseda and his orchestra was 'a microcosm of whatβs happening in the country today, with things being politicized that werenβt politicized before.' (NYTimes 1.27.26)
Is Borda suggesting that (classical) music wasn't "politicized" prior to the current moment?
27.01.2026 19:32 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0After thoughtful consideration, I have decided to withdraw my Symphony No. 15 "Lincoln" from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Symphony No. 15 is a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, and the values of the Kennedy Center today are in direct conflict with the message of the Symphony. Therefore, I feel an obligation to withdraw this Symphony premiere from the Kennedy Center under its current leadership. Philip Glass
27.01.2026 16:28 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1People are being shot in the streets.
Just after they are shot, doctors are asking to save their lives.
And CBP/ICE are saying no.
Those same murderers are invading hospitals and clinics.
How are our professional associations reacting?
Amazon owns Ring, and Ring has partnered with Flock, a license-plate tracking service used by police, ICE, and more. Ring cameras were already surveillance tools for police, but they are now even more readily accessible to ICE and other government agencies. www.aclu.org/news/privacy...

I had missed this piece at the time; HT @roxanegay.bsky.social.
13.01.2026 06:49 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I meant to post this here. As @roxanegay.bsky.social writes, this happened "because resistance and protest do work."

13.01.2026 01:03 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Music folks, weren't there significant domestic abuse allegations about/against Morton Feldman? I haven't seen them mentioned in a single post or article about his centenary.
13.01.2026 01:02 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 1Also, I didn't know who you were (from your handle) until I clicked over to your profile; hello and congratulations on all the life things!
11.01.2026 06:17 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0You're right! I thought about this, but was having trouble finding easy and direct instructions. Which only underscores your point/the issue! I've tried to turn off AI search results in my browser(s) with limited success.
11.01.2026 06:17 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0To turn off AI email summaries in Gmail, you must disable "Smart features and personalization" in Desktop Settings (General Tab > Smart features) or the Gmail app (Settings > [Your Account] > General > Smart features), which turns off AI-driven summaries and writing help but also other features like Smart Reply/Compose, while specific order summaries might need feedback to senders or are just part of the default experience.
For anyone who wants to turn these features off.
11.01.2026 04:42 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Despite protests, poetry and a last minute cease-and-desist letter accusing Johns Hopkins - and Baltimore city - of stonewalling the community, JHU yesterday went ahead and cut down those trees on Remington Ave. for its Data Science & AI Institute project. tinyurl.com/4srfr5nk
09.01.2026 19:59 β π 8 π 3 π¬ 0 π 0I'm sure NYers are well versed in Mamdani at this point, but I thought this was an excellent conversation. I've never been so engaged listening to someone talk about buses (starts around 41:00): "it's a political choice that that bus is traveling at 5 mph."

THE FRONT-RUNNER Californias Gavin Newsom would rather be wrong than weak. By Helen Lewis (Header for an Atlantic article about Gavin Newsom, it features a picture of him looking like a real smart politics guy)
βGAVIN NEWSOM HAS A 30-PAGE FILE of reasons the Democrats lost the 2024 presidential election. Bounding across his Sacramento office, he starts listing them: incumbency, inflation, interest rates, Israelβand that's just the letter I. "Yes, too woke," he adds. "Yes, 107 days, referring to the short campaign after Joe Biden's forced withdrawal. But the California governor distills his party's problem down to one word. *Weak.*β (On the last paragraph the text starts to fade from black to gray)
βNewsom slaps his hand on a marked-up hardback of Bill Clinton's memoir, brought down from the shelf a minute earlier. "Given the choice," he tells me, summing up a crucial Clinton insightβone many Democrats still can't quite seem to graspβ"the American people always support strong and wrong versus weak andβ (The text gets lighter and lighter until you can barely read it, thatβs how huh kiwi youβve hit that paywall baybay)
The text faded to the paywall at the same rate as my eyes would have glazed over anyway
