5. Selling aka deployment.

Finally, the selling - "let them eat cake!" But like Marie Antoinette's tone-deaf suggestion, AI is oversold to communities who lack ingredients, recipes, or ovens. Technosolutionism promises the world but often delivers surveillance and extraction instead.

4. Tasting aka evals.

Who decides if it's "tasty"? Average-based metrics hide harm to minorities. What tastes good to the majority might be toxic to others. 21+ definitions of fairness exist but achieving them simultaneously is impossible. Whose taste buds matter?

3. The baking process aka training.

This is unidirectional - once baked, you can't unbake! Like a cake, AI models are hard to modify after training. Want changes? Bake a whole new cake at millions of dollars and massive carbon costs.

2. The recipes aka methods.

These are increasingly homogenized - one-size-fits-all transformers dominate. But "we cannot just add diverse stakeholders and stir" - naive inclusion often backfires. Complex ingredients need careful understanding, not just mixing everything together.

1. The ingredients aka data.

This often come from exploitation and non-consent - like cocoa from Africa but profits elsewhere. AI datasets scrape our content without consent, outsource harmful moderation to marginalized workers. We rarely know what's in our AI "cake mix".

I am at the data story workshop hosted by @martinmundt.bsky.social where we talk about AI as cake! We redefine Yann LeCun's famous analogy beyond just learning types. From ingredients to selling - we break down how AI really works and who gets left out.

This has happened to me so many times. I got assigned 6 papers to review within 3 days, and received threats from PC and AC that I would be flagged if I don't complete them properly.

And after all this stress, I found out that each paper has received 5-6 reviews. So angry and upset with ARR rn.
