Top view of a black hornet with a reddish-brown head and scutellum. The second segment of its abdomen is a bright orange band like the skin of a somewhat dirty orange. Its legs and wings are splayed out

The hornet now viewed from a diagonal, from below angle. There is a focus on its bright red head with dark red and black mandibles.

Vespa tropica (haematodes)

My impression of this wasp is its brutish life cycle of robbing and destroying paper wasp nests, the black mandibles sell the bandit look even more. Nonetheless, a gorgeous, decently big wasp, to find a dead one is a treat.

A mating pair of yellow and black ambush bugs on a matching colored goldenrod flower. The female bug is also munching on a bee. A lego figure is clinging to the petals of the flower and looking at the bugs with a horrified expression.

I usually carry a Lego figure as a handy scale reference when I'm out photographing insects, and I often can't resist inserting it just for fun. Mating pair of ambush bugs on a goldenrod, the female is eating a bee (Indiana Dunes National Park). #insects

iโ€™ll also never forget the time someone posted their โ€œgoliath beetle huntingโ€ haul on the insect subreddit. 60+ specimen, taken out of the wild all in a short amount of time, for no purpose other than greed. i remember everyone was pissed in the comments

genuinely once i found out the ethics behind specimen trade i just kinda decided i would avoid it. i get so much more joy out of being able to care for an insect until its last moments anyways. that care makes the act of pinning them so much more intimate and special
