Ocean-surface warming four times faster now than late-1980s - National Centre for Earth Observation A new study, published today (Tuesday, 28 January 2025) in Environmental Research Letters has shown that the rate of ocean warming has more than quadrupled over the past four decades.

Warming is driven by Earth’s growing energy imbalance where more energy from the Sun is absorbed than escaping back to space.

This imbalance has doubled since 2010 due to increasing greenhouse gas and Earth reflecting less sunlight to space.
