Shenmue is a series that is known for being a goofy game about sailors and forklifts because the English dub makes those moments memeable and leads to the series being mocked and ridiculed.

The Japanese version is 100% better.

The 34th AM Show, held on Sept. 12-14, 1996, had major representation by Sega. It's booth was one of the largest at an expo that had strong showings from Namco and Capcom. Alongside a row of VF3 cabinets, a high-end promo video of the game was on display and drew huge and constant crowds.

A photograph shows old preview code of Shadow of the Colossus, a copy of Edge magazine with the game on its cover, and two old promotional DVDs for the game.

1. I’ve now been doing this long enough that I’m doing retrospectives on games I covered the first time around. So in this photo from the story, you can spot preview code Sony sent us when I worked at 1UP, which is conveniently dated 7/25/05 — a few months before the game shipped.

Izumi Takano was actually supposed to be what Nozomi was going to be in Shenmue 1 but they ended up going with Nozomi as we know her now. Izumi Takano was eventually saved for Shenmue 2 and that was the right choice in the end.
