Astroturf

Astroturf is the answer. Never cut grass of pull weeds again.

2/2 for games that have a simple rule set but deep strategic depth (I think of chess as an example). Easy to learn how to move pieces but difficult to master I want to discover on my own. For complex rules I want the structured teach. (I’ll still have to play it a lot to learn the strategic depth).

I’m learning Fields of Fire by going through the teaching scenarios of the 1st training manual (there are two plus a full rule book). Even though it’s a gradual teach of the mechanics/rules, no one will ever pick up all the strategic options/nuance. It will take many plays to get to that depth. 1/2

Just my opinion, but I would say you should not water it down but gradually teach the depth through teaching scenarios that gradually ramp up the complexity/depth as you teach. A couple of good examples I can think of are Fields of Fire Deluxe Edition and Atlantic Chase.

Love Longshot the Dice Game. It’s a lot of fun.

Great day gaming with my friend Daniel. Dune War for Arrakis was tight down to wire and my first time playing Red Flag Over Paris was fun (even though I lost-need some more plays of that one). Now it’s an Old Fashioned and some “light rules” reading. 😁 @gmtgames.bsky.social @fredserval.bsky.social

I think they have done this at SDHistcon once or twice in the past. I hope to catch a play of this someday at some point.

Fun couple of quick plays of “Pacific War 1942 Solitaire” by Worthington Publishing. Lost the 1st game badly with about 9 points and won the last game with 21 points. Fun little quick playing travel game.

Very cool version of the game and a great game at that.

Great game. One of my favorites and a great one for introducing people to war gaming. Started a friend off with this one, then some Undaunted, then some block war games and working him up to Combat Commander Pacific then Empire of the Sun, Fire in the Lake etc.
