Something I'm loving about this app is it's allowing me to find My People (or at least people who hit my aesthetic and humour) so much more easily.

That's a useful perspective, thank you. It probably depends on the audience. As what you're doing is in activist spaces/many ppl who get this context does make sense

If you were trying to reach Jewish folks more entrenched in their communities/ older definitions, less effective, depends on yr aim

This discussion has been enlightening. As a Bluesky newbie I am pleased to see the level of discourse is a bit more productive here. Hard when tensions run so high, so thanks all. Level heads in the face of hate and horror are what will, in the end being us peace 🖤

first place. But as they are there now, it goes back to the question of where these particular Jewish ppl are meant to go. Advocating for removal of Jews w nowhere to go but the sea...is a problem.

Maybe the slogan has shifted in meaning over the years, and if so it's a moot point

Eh I don't entirely agree. I think it's more that it has been used as a call *to remove the Jews from Israel*, regardless as to whether Israel is tied to Jewishness in the diaspora. Calling for the removal of *those specific Jews* is the issue.

May be Zionism's fault for putting them there in the

Thanks for the perspective - I'll have to read around it more. My awareness had been of it as a contentious one and the first reaction to see it was 😬 but open to changing my mind. Thanks for the civil engagement, appreciated.

Thanks for sharing this. There is so much tension and distrust around this area, it's good to hear other perspectives. Appreciated.

I'm not here to get into a fight over semantics, anyway.

But if you are interested in getting Jews on side in particular for your - worthwhile ! - efforts it might make sense to avoid a thing that may carry wrong associations.

Tho if that's what you're after, then carry on!

Best of luck 🖤🖤🖤

Its meaning is at the very least contested. The anti defamation league see it as calling for the destruction of Israel, and Austria and Germany have considered banning it for that reason. Others say it means a broader, vaguer type of liberation.

I'd err on the side of caution myself

Just an example.

I'm all for what you're doing

But it's always good not to not accidentally co-opt an antisemitic slogan when campaigning, I reckon

I will go away and look further to make sure my understanding isn't wrong tho - maybe there is an alternate meaning I'm unaware of

Absolutely intended not to get into these sorts of discussions on here but that phrase jumped out at me, as did your question.

Back to writing memes and poetry. Peace. 🖤

Yes, I'd like to opt for neither, thanks. Ceasefire first, then commitment in the international community to bringing about lasting peace. It's the only way.

I'm sure noone here advocating for the Palestinian cause is intentionally repeating an anti-Semitic rallying cry, but it's interesting how a catchy slogan can catch on maybe without knowing it's context and origin

Normally used as a bit of a dog whistle in activities spaces as far as I understand, so interesting to see it used in this context specifically

29.10.2023 18:16 — 👍 1    🔁 0    💬 1    📌 0

Yep. It means no Israel (and no Jews i - see Hamas' 1988 charter which uses the line) from the river Jordan to the sea the other side.

All for Palestinian rights but it does beg the question as to where the Israeli Jews are meant to go..?
