I’ve been here for over six months now, and not once have I ever been made to feel unwelcome. My coworkers, neighbours, landlords, hospo workers, healthcare workers, kids’ teachers and classmates’ parents… Kiwis have generally treated me and my family well!

The police showed us who they are during the 2020 racial justice protests. It is wild to me that the broader public saw this, was initially horrified, but then tried to forget about what they had seen. Maybe they were too scared of the idea that police are unaccountable and don’t keep them safe?

I’ll admit to being a little annoyed by this Stuff headline. Most of her speech was about celebrating her accomplishments and thanking her colleagues. Even the “callout” bits were framed positively! Coverage aside, it was a lovely speech.
