Mr. Mamdani must find common ground with the police to avoid the tensions that plagued Mr. de Blasio, said Mitchell Moss, a professor of urban policy at New York University.

Mr. de Blasio tried to bring changes to the department, but he angered the rank and file. He defended a staffer who had ridiculed the police on social media and gave a speech describing how he had warned his biracial son that he could have problems with the police. The tension culminated in a painfully public protest in 2015 by officers who turned their backs on Mr. de Blasio at a police funeral.

“You can’t be mayor of New York without having the support of the Police Department,” Professor Moss said. “De Blasio never recovered from the loss of respect police gave him.”

Mr. de Blasio balanced calls for reform with his choice for commissioner: William Bratton, a well-established leader whose experience running the department in the 1990s comforted many police unions.

This is such a terrible and anti-democratic idea. The mayor of NYC should not need the support of the NYPD. There are pragmatic reasons why the mayor needs to have a working relationship with the police, but the NYPD doesn't get a veto over what voters want. www.nytimes.com/2025/09/08/n...

Any plaintiff side employment lawyer will offer a free consult to assess the case. Some examples: Eisner Dictor, Outten & Golden, Goddard Law. She could also use the NYC Bar lawyer referral service

one of the most infuriating parts of the Epstein story is over the same years that young women went to police and reported assault, and were ignored, law enforcement is pushing this idea that they need massive grants and manpower to rescue thousands of girls they say don’t even know they’re victims

No issues for me or my trans partner coming through customs after traveling to Mexico in March.

I recommend doing the mobile passport app bc they only had like 3 agents to serve an entire plane full of people. The app lets you go to a shorter line.

It really shocked me when other queer people put quotes from the Obergefell decision in their wedding vows. The courts have always been a deeply violent and oppressive institution! Not something to celebrate! Hard to enjoy feeling smug about it now though

transcription of comments made by julianna margulies on the back room with andy ostroy: “There was a film being show by this Black lesbian club on Columbia campus and they put signs up that said, ‘No Jews allowed.’ And as someone who plays a lesbian journalist on The Morning Show, I’m more offended by it as a lesbian than I am as a Jew, to be honest with you, because I wanna say to them, ‘You fucking idiots: You don’t exist. Like, you’re even lower than the Jews. A) You’re Black and B) you’re gay. And you’re turning your back against the people who support you? Because Jews, they rally around everybody.’”

In a just world, Julianna Margulies would be the one losing work for these comments she made on a recent podcast.

(Worth noting, the story she tells isn’t even accurate. There was an email that said “no zionists invited.”)
