This is made possible by an innovation in the geometric phase gate interaction that we call the β€œSmooth” gate.

This means we can operate our next generation systems at orders-of-magnitude hotter ion temperatures, without degrading performance.

It will simplify architectures.

More qubits for less engineering.

This is the highest fidelity two qubit gate ever demonstrated, but that is not the biggest news of the paper.

Every prior high fidelity two qubit gate demonstration had to cool their motional modes to the ground state to reach high fidelities.

We did no ground state cooling before getting 1e-4

Why are there two sets of APS passwords and emails, depending on which part of their website you go to? It’s been this way for years and it makes no sense

If you say the universe is in a β€œmixed-state”, you’re making a statement about your knowledge of the universe, not the universe itself

Good advise for classical algorithms too

People are making actual computers now. That changes the problems: things we thought were important aren’t, and things we didn’t think about at all are. All of the technology has changed too.

The toolbox is different and we have a better picture of what needs to be built with it

The theorists mostly left trapped ions in the early 2000s. Since then most of the theory has been done by a handful of particularly brilliant experimentalists.

There is a widely-held, erroneous sentiment that there is nothing new in TI. Maybe that was true in the early 2000s, but it isn’t anymore

Of course I don’t mind. A lot of yall are smarter than me and I don’t want to compete with you…

Of course these are all interesting/useful fields, and often more mathematically rich than hardware… but the hardware has to work for these things to have value. It’s not just an engineering problemβ€”theory work can make the engineering challenges much easier

The volume of theory work on quantum information, quantum algorithms, QEC, etc… compared to hardware problems is really remarkable

I grew up in Alabama and live in Texas. Most of my friends and family throughout my life are conservative. Almost every argument is them being mad that liberals are doing something they aren’t doing.

I cannot emphasize this enough:

They will do this no matter what liberals actually do or say!

What I keep thinking about is how much Trump’s entire premise of his presidency for many people was that he simply won’t do the stuff they don’t want him to do while doing exactly what they want him to do.
