Check this out though. Runner on first, batter hits the ball to the third baseman. He throws it to second, without committing an error. Runner is safe at second. I guess he got a good lead. If the scorer thinks the third baseman coulda thrown the batter out at first, it’s a fielders choice. No hit.

Yeah, I think it’s semantics. Force play or force out is a more descriptive and explicit way of describing what was also a fielders choice.

Ha re-deleted my last post by accident. Dur. So yeah. You get charged with an at-bat if you hit into a fielders choice. credited as an out, and an at-bat with no hit. Force out that doesn’t involve the hitter is always a fielders choice. whether or not they describe it that way

a failure to get another runner out on the bases is probably scored a hit if they didn’t have a shot at getting the batter out at first base. If they had a shot and elected to go for another runner, then it’s Fc whether they get the runner out or not. I think that’s right…haven’t umpired in ages

A force out on a batted ball is FC by definition, if the batter reaches first safely. But FC does not have to be a force out. It can be an out on or an *attempt* to get out another runner already on base, instead of getting the batter headed to first. I believe FC on an attempt is a scoring decision
