I'm watching this event. A few thoughts - this may end up a thread.
I've worked in this space a long time and I could be watching this 20 years ago. David's points in particular are outdated - his point about "weak families" when referring to non-nuclear families is deeply disrespectful. π§΅#carers

Armed police threatened to arrest Kent protester for holding Palestinian flag
Officers accused Laura Murton who also had a sign saying βFree Gazaβ of supporting a proscribed organisation

Weβll also be sharing a new publication centring the voices of those who have experienced prison
Government/charity/academic reports silence this form of knowledge-making as they lack proximity to our communities and lack the range of analysis needed to understand the depth of our experience

She saw three men in uniform beating Ballal with rifles and another person who appeared to be filming the attack.

What Robert Jenrick fails to mention is that a Tory Govt asked David Lammy to look into the unequal treatment Black/brown communities receive in the criminal legal system
Sentencing decisions needed greater scrutiny, we were told, and Pre-Sentence reports were one way of countering unequal treatment

The data is clear on the unequal, racist treatment Black/brown communities face in the criminal legal system
Under a Tory Govt in 2016, the MOJ produced research showing the odds of a receiving a prison sentence for drug offences were 240% higher for βBAMEβ people compared to white counterparts

Demand an investigation
Join our call to demand an independent investigation into the illegal use of handcuffs on pregnant women detained at HMP Bronzefield
A pregnant woman who was unlawfully handcuffed to an officer for 48 hours during labour says βI feel I was treated as less than an animal.β
She's calling for an independent investigation into why this was allowed to happen β and she needs all our support.

How is existing practice, policy, and public narrative ensuring that hard-wired racism in our society is harming Black/brown children?
As part of #ChildrensMentalHealthWeek we highlight several interventions created with young people that are not generic approaches:

Exclusive: Joint letter from organisations and experts says singling out British-Pakistani men draws attention away from other sources of sexual abuse
All children and adult survivors of child sexual abuse deserve better than being treated as a political football.
This letter was from 2023, the need for responses to child sexual abuse to be survivor-centred, inclusive and evidence-based holds today.

Israeli whistleblowers detail horror of shadowy detention facility for Palestinians | CNN
At a military base that now doubles as a detention center in Israelβs Negev desert, an Israeli working at the facility snapped two photographs of a scene that he says continues to haunt him.
Horrified by every new detail that emerges from the Sednaya prison. But Syria is not alone in human rights abuses. Today, I'm also reflecting on reports of systemic torture and abuse of Palestinians inside Israel's Sde Teiman detention camp. Human rights accountability must transcend borders.

β¦οΈA third of women in prison grew up in care
Time to stop funding prisons and fund community services instead.
