Additionally, 3 billion dollars have been accrued in settlement cases surrounding the U.S. Catholic Church’s sexual abuse scandals.

Recent studies reveal that 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 12 boys will be sexually abused before they turn 18. 95% of those children will be abused by someone they know and trust. Most shocking, 1 in 3 adults would not believe a child if they disclosed abuse.

Although he referred to his case, and how authorities and the public failed to scrutinize some of the parents of the murdered children, despite their own history of engaging in questionable behavior, his statement serves as a broader commentary on a specter haunting North America: child harm.

Damien Echols once said, “Maybe for the general public it’s not quite as scary to believe that bloodthirsty satanists were out murdering children than it is to believe that parents are actually out murdering their own children.”
