The best thing about having a cat is that when things go missing or seem awry you can just blame it on the kitty and half the time itβs because of them anyway

incredibly this also mostly works for teenagers, who are really just large toddlers but are better at connecting the actions-consequences dots. but you also cannot fight them, because you will lose. (again, exceptions for safety etc)

my one (1) piece of parenting advice for toddlers is that the only winning move is not to play. don't want to wear a coat? ok, see how you like it when it's cold outside! don't want to eat? ok! be hungry! you can't fight them. they'll always win. (exceptions for safety, like seat belts/helmets)

sometimes I had to literally pin my children down to get them in their car seats or put shoes on or whatever and I'd be in a heavy sweat afterwards like I had been to the gym. they were like no more than 30 pounds at the time. toddlers have incredible strength

Moral rot in elite journalism is killing the whole field
The Nuzzi/RFK Jr. mess and the revelation of Epsteinβs journo pals lay bare a profound moral absence at the heart of our free press.
βI turn down flacks trying to send me free booze multiple times a day, and invitations to all-expenses-paid junkets no less than once a month... This week, I yet again found myself wondering why I'm even bothering.β this is very good, from @marisakabas.bsky.social

That doesn't mean Olivia's actions weren't wildly unethical as a journalist, and it doesn't make her a good person
but I just hate what this world does to young women and I hope we don't lose sight of that aspect in all of this

Yeah sorry seeing that Olivia Nuzzi was making songs about being "jailbait" at 16 and no parent stepped in, that she was scooped up by a MUCH older and MUCH more powerful man when she was concerningly young...
This seems like a much sadder story than the current discourse on it suggests

To the left, a large brown dog lies down, looking up mournfully. To the right, a tuxedo cat perches on a tree, looking down regally and annoyed. They are in a room with an Oriental rug and a brown couch with some folded laundry and shoes strewn around because this household has some wild ADHD. Thereβs a blue Miro painting on the mantle.
They donβt agree on much but they do agree on this: Mother leaves the house far too often

as the mom of two teens let me just assure you, if you haven't spent time around teens lately: teenagers are absolutely still children even if they look older than they are. they are underdone -- they are still cooking! they are in no way adults in any sense of the word.
