Lovely article in the @lancasteruni.bsky.social newspaper by Connie Hawley on the pleasures of book fairs, browsing physical books & meeting sellers in person. Ilkley Book Fair got a name-check and that's us in the picture too! (pic @dbderbzbooks.bsky.social) scan.lancastersu.co.uk/2025/10/17/b...
17.10.2025 13:32 β π 6 π 5 π¬ 0 π 0The cover of the new Recovered Books edition of "And So Did I" by Malachi Whitaker. A dark green cover, through which two eyes stare out at us.
A book I have very much enjoyed this week: "And So Do I" by Bradford writer Malachi Whitaker, a sort of chronicle of 2 years in the late 1930s, first published in 1939 & newly republished. Irreverent, humorous, often startlingly honest, with an undercurrent of existential bewilderment and searching.

Bluesky Joyceans! Flanneurs! Of 'At Swim-Two-Birds' Joyce reportedly remarked "Thatβs a real writer, with a true comic spirit. A really funny book." Can anyone source this comment? Was it in a letter, or something he said to (possibly) a French critic? Thanks for any help.
