UK rejects visa for girl left destitute in Jamaica by Hurricane Melissa Lati-Yana Brown’s parents had asked for application to be expedited so she could join them in UK after house ruined

Separating parents from children, even in the middle of a natural disaster. Shabana Mahmood's Home Office is the same as Suella Braverman's Home Office, is the same as the one that gave us the Windrush scandal

The ethics of immigration: How biased is the field? Abstract. Methodological nationalism is the assumption that nation-states are the relevant units for analyzing social phenomena. Most of the social science

The distinction between #mild & #heavy #bias is intuitive

Imagine people discussing some principle while referring only to men They are biased but less than if they spent their time arguing it can't apply to women

Now, replace men/women with citizens/ #immigrants

I wish I didn’t have to share this. But the BBC has decided to censor my first Reith Lecture.

They deleted the line in which I describe Donald Trump as “the most openly corrupt president in American history.” /1

Travel rights (which are reasonably robust, if regularly overlooked) can provide a bulwark against these sorts of anti-travel provisions. I wrote about this in Travel Rights in a Culture War, 101 Tex. L. Rev. O. 21 (2022),

Pope Leo offers his strongest criticism of Trump yet The Pope, who is American, called for "deep reflection" on how migrants are treated, and spoke against US bombing of Venezuelan vessels.

"Speaking in English, and reaching a US audience directly, he reiterated the Catholic belief that every Christian will ultimately be judged on how they welcomed "the foreigner".

Oh, wait: there is no such thing as "christian nationalism" 🤔😇

Britain Is Having the World’s Most Extreme Immigration Debate The British discourse makes even the Trump administration look moderate.

Imagine a country where hundreds of thousands of legal permanent residents find stripped of their status and forced to reapply for their right to remain. Many no longer meet the criteria, plunged into illegality, subject to deportation.

From “brain drain” to “care drain” : Women's labor migration and methodological sexism The metaphor of “care drain” has been created as a womanly parallel to the “brain drain” idea. Just as “brain drain” suggests that the skilled migrant…

I strongly opposed framing #women 's migration as #CareDrain & loss to children left behind because

1️⃣it relies on sexist #stereotypes
2️⃣devalues #care work
3️⃣prevents us from understanding #skills in #migration

But metaphors are stronger than arguments 🏋️‍♀️

On #immigration, true #cosmopolitans should argue that states violating people’s right to #free movement should either be sentenced, or owe compensations to the people harmed, or that States deserve #amnesty
Why has nobody ever considered these positions?

Désolée, mon intention n'était pas offensante, juste descriptive: en Roumanie, la pression religieuse est devenue si grande que le nouveau président mathématicien a dû se marier avec sa partenaire (et on lui demande si les enfants sont baptisés etc.). There is a more pressing issue. Ministers must ensure that the vast numbers of immigrants who arrived in the so-called Boriswave of 2020-21 are not automatically absorbed into the permanent population. They are about to cross the the five-year threshold into ILR, yet Labour continues to dither. Ms Mahmood must freeze the status of this huge cohort while a new residency regime is finalised. A million or more extra permanent residents in these islands, let in on the nod, is simply unacceptable. Finally, the home secretary must acquaint herself, and the public, with an accurate estimate of the actual number of foreign nationals living here, what taxes they pay and what services they consume. Without hard data, all the political parties are fumbling around in the dark.

The Times finds it "unacceptable" that people who came here legally in 2021 and have been living and working here since should allowed to stay.

In October 2023, @bboudou.bsky.social offered me to co-edit a handbook on political theory with him. The publisher wanted it published by September 2025. I thought it was a joke. Benjamin did not.

Today, we are very happy to announce the publication of Théorie Politique!
