No one seems to be really sure if they were once part of a burial mound, although a lack of human remains when excavating the sites, & a feeling that the capstones were placed deliberately as a marker seems to be current thinking.

Before 2025, since 2009, the teams I support (Spurs, Bath Rugby & England in both football & rugby) had won just one final (2022 Women's Euros), and lost more finals than I can remember. Finally, a stunning location for this beautiful cromlech named Gwal-y-Filiast aka Bwrdd Arthur or Arthur's Table. Accessible through a wooded setting, where many trees have fallen and been cleared, this is glorious & well worth seeking out. A fitting final site for our #standingstonesunday tour 🧵6/6

Only two stones remain at the site of Meini Gwyr. Once an impressive stone circle, this site now appears rather underwhelming and quite sad. No real atmosphere here unfortunately. #standingstonecircle 🧵 5/6

Next, on #standingstonesunday we stopped briefly to visit these two leaning stones at Tafarn-y-Bwlch. Located in a field beside a busy road, the sheep were bleating and not best pleased to see us. Nice stones though. 🧵 3/6

A tour of some of Pembrokeshire's ancient sites for #standingstonesunday started with this beauty. An odd setting for Carreg Coetan Arthur overall, but in the enclosure it's very peaceful and atmospheric. Remarkably the capstone is balanced on just 2 of the 4 stones.
