I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have known if I hadn't time in Central America. Should a team of journalists have that experience? Probably. But it takes a member of the team to know sugar cane.

What's the reason you knew it was cane? You recognized it by sight? You knew Puerto Rico grows it? I don't understand how you know know how to visually identify a crop from history class.

Yeah, my first impression was grass. Then about a second later, no that's sugar cane. That was during the setup before the commercial break as I recall. That only lasted a few seconds.

To be fair, since not much sugar cane is grown here, I don't expect Americans to recognize it off the bat. I wasn't even 100% sure until the start where they showed a woman with a machete trimming it.

People don't recognize sugar cane. That's OK if you never grew up where they grow it. I grew up in WI so I recognize corn and soybeans. And I've been around, so I recognize sugar cane, tea, and rice as very common crops.

I lived in Latin America for a bit, so I recognized the sugar cane right off the bat. I'll give grace to those who didn't realize it was sugar cane. Like the NYT, paper of record.
