Action Report #6 Understanding the Law and Policies for Grant Terminations for the National Science Foundation March 25, 2025 This informational guide is primarily intended for National Science Foundation (NSF)βfunded principal investigators if NSF requests a change in your work. The level of detail assumes the reader has basic familiarity with the NSFβs two main review criteria (intellectual merit and broader impacts), in addition to the NSFβs Proposal & Award Policies & Procedures Guide (PAPPG). However, this guide may also be relevant to research administrators, legal experts, or awards from other funding agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), given that the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) applies to all agencies, not just the NSF.
So what should NSF grantees, worried by terminated grants, do? That's something I've been thinking a lot about, given my own NSF grants.
First, I'd encourage to read this AAUP guide focused squarely on NSF grant termination policies: www.aaup.org/sites/defaul...
Also, βone source told Science the agencyβs $1.1 billion education directorate may have canceled as many as 200 grants just today.β

What?!
βNSF announced it was returning all grant proposals previously approved for funding and awaiting final signoff... In the meantime, according to sources, NSF will not make any new awards.β

The amazing @roope.bsky.social dug deep on this and teaming up with topologist extraordinaire @allisonhenrich1.bsky.social we devised a first-ever tidy way of turning knot patterns into string code, which can then be analysed readily for patterns. We natch also have the coordinates.

Two Republican senators told me tonight this vote shows they can execute the same strategy again β cut Democrats out of the negotiations on a govβt funding bill, pass it thru the House, and expect Senate Dems to back down and not filibuster it.
