A herd of goats is being dropped off in Toronto today. They have a job to do A herd of 50 goats is being dropped off in the city this week, where they will spend two days munching on invasive species at the Don Valley Brick Works Park.

If you’re in the Brick Works today or tomorrow, go say hi to the herd of #goats hired by the city of #Toronto to eat invasive plants. The Prescribed Goat Grazing Project is brilliant - helps the environment, supports a local business, and acts as a tourist attraction. www.thestar.com/news/gta/a-h...

Shout out to the High Court of Australia for a progressive #NativeTitle decision on connection without presence, and how to prove it: [2025] HCA 12 at paras 24-26, 53-100. Canadian #Aboriginal title was partly built on #Australian law (Delgamuukw at para 153), so here’s hoping Canada follows suit.

The Dire Wolf Is Back Colossal, a genetics startup, has birthed three pups that contain ancient DNA retrieved from the remains of the animal’s extinct ancestors. Is the woolly mammoth next?

Colossal Biosciences has just de-extincted the #DireWolf. They have a patent on the process of genomic editing for #DeExtinction (18/425,546). I wonder if they will apply for a #patent on the genome. They didn’t create it, but finding it was arguably inventive. www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

Apparently, #California courts have been re-enacting historical civil rights cases since 2023. It’s a great way to make justice more transparent and accessible. Has any Canadian court tried this, @lawscribes.bsky.social?

2024 ONCA 925 (CanLII) | Arcamm Electrical Services Ltd. v. Avison Young Real Estate Management Services LP | CanLII Access all information related to judgment Arcamm Electrical Services Ltd. v. Avison Young Real Estate Management Services LP, 2024 ONCA 925 (CanLII) on CanLII.

The Court of Appeal for Ontario just released a fascinating decision, holding that contributory fault is a defence to breach of contract, so damages are apportioned based on relative fault (paras 41-45). It keeps getting harder to cleanly separate contract and tort. www.canlii.org/en/on/onca/d...

Slovak health system on life support after parliament threatens doctors with prison The Slovak health ministry and health trade unions have three weeks to reach a consensus, with serious healthcare disruption looming, and the risk of imprisonment.

In #Slovakia, roughly 6% of #doctors tried to resign. The government responded with back-to-work legislation, preventing them from resigning. This is especially unusual because (1) the penalty for non-compliance is a year in prison and (2) sick notes cannot be used. www.euractiv.com/section/heal...

Barristers are taught not to wear their #gown outside the courthouse. In Ontario, it’s a faux pas. But in Tanzania, speaking to the press while wearing a gown warrants disbarment: 2024 ONSC 6240 at paras 114-116. I wonder if the same applies to posting pictures of oneself in a gown on #SocialMedia.

Children to be banned from social media from next year after parliament votes through world-first laws The government and opposition moved fast to ram through the bill before the end of the parliamentary year, sparking calls for more scrutiny from some Coalition MPs, independents and the Greens.

Australia just passed a law to force #SocialMedia platforms to prevent use by children under 16. The definition of social media (s 63C) is clever. Once the planned exemptions are published, it could be a good model for any future laws targeting social media. #AusPol www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11...

Jailed activist tests India's anti-terror law – DW – 11/23/2024 Activist Umar Khalid has been jailed without trial since he was accused of inciting violence during anti-government protests in 2020. The law used against Khalid continues to be used to incarcerate di...

This case raises an interesting question: is it discrimination on the basis of religion to weaponize anti-terror laws to silence opposition to an anti-Muslim law, if the person being silenced is not a practicing Muslim? In Canada, probably, but this is #India #Islamophobia amp.dw.com/en/indian-ac...
