For the dummies here (ie me!) could you please explain what “CMIP5 historic forcing” means and what exactly the RCP8.5 scenario represents?

I can remember being taught the “add zero” rule in primary school but not understanding it. I mean adding zero just gives the same answer. That’s dumb.
It was only in my late teens as I was working in non base 10 that I had a Eureka moment. Ah! That’s what they meant.

And the conclusion from that is that either there is a lack of political will (almost definitely for the last lot, jury still out for this set) or the problems are so systemically huge as to defy quick solutions.

I don’t want to be Eeyore but you are perhaps starting from the wrong place. The UK policy civil servants I have dealt with have without exception been super smart, very switched on and truly committed to their policy areas. To assume that they are unaware of the state of HE is a mistake.

Couldn’t agree more. We need STEM to drive economic growth but we need the arts to save our souls , and frankly to keep us honest.
