I’m on Vancouver Island- an island in the ocean. I’m at a ferry terminal- notorious for being near the water- the ocean.

A tourist just said “ew, it smells like ocean,” as though ocean would be a weird thing for the ocean (that is *clearly visible*) to smell like.
