It’s a tectonic shift under you, to go from having at least one parent to having none, or even aunts or uncles. She was the last of her family and it’s a loss felt throughout extended family, who lost the last remaining matriarch. She was a beloved aunt and grandaunt too. The end of a generation.

There’s something about losing your second parent that’s even harder than the first. When my dad died, it was devastating but we still had Mom. With her gone, it’s just a gaping void with no parent to turn to. It would be the same I think if she’d gone first.
