A black and white comic. Page 1 of 4: The first panel depicts a garden in front of a brick house. There is a metal railing outside the house, possibly blocking off some stairs leading underground. A couple of basement windows further indicate that we are looking at the outdoor entrance to a basement. A round little woman with glasses and tiny feet – the landlady – is guiding a tall, lanky male-presenting teenager with a sports bag over their shoulder across the yard. The landlady speaks: “I keep the lawn mowed, but you will shovel your own snow in winter. Bad back, you see. The stairs. Keep them clean, watch yourself.” Along the bottom of the panel, the title “Unwanted Visitor” appears. In the next couple of panels, the landlady shows the teenager into a basement apartment, with a black and white chequered floor and sparse furniture. The teenager looks unimpressed as the landlady goes on: “Kitchenette, bathroom. Keep the window open while you cook. Grease is a terrible thing. There’s a scraper in the shower – use it. Mold is also a terrible thing. No parties, no guests, no girlfriends, no noise.” The teenager begins to speak: “What about…” The landlady interrupts: “Do not use the phone jack. My sick old mother must be able to reach me when I’m at work.” In the next panel, the teenager points to the far wall of the room, where a door can be seen behind a curtain. “What’s with the door?” the teenager asks. The landlady responds from off-panel: “That leads to my part of the house. It will be kept locked. From my side, of course.” Next, landlady holds up the curtain, gesturing toward it as the teenager looks annoyed. “Doesn’t feel very private,” says the teenager. “Sure it does,” says the landlady. “There’s a curtain. I need emergency access. Fires are a terrible thing.” “What about the front door?” says the teenager. “Right,” says the landlady, handing over a set of keys, shown in closeup. “You will make no copies of this. Enjoy your studies.”
Page 2 of 4: There are four similar panels in a 2x2 grid, depicting the teenager from before in closeup, apparently seen through a bathroom mirror. In the first panel, the teenager is applying mascara to their eyelashes. A hissing sound effect, represented by a slithering trail of the letter “H”, emerges from the background and carries through the next two panels. The teenager thinks: “Two months and I still can’t get used to that smell. Must be the plumbing. And that hissing sound… the pipes? Or is an animal dying in the wall?” The teenager, now wearing lipstick, roughs up their hair, making a pouty face at the mirror and looking fabulous. They wipe the lipstick off on their arm, glancing over their shoulder. The teenager thinks: “Maybe there really is a mold p…” but is interrupted by a slamming sound from off-panel. “Who’s there?” the teenager asks. In the next panel, the teenager looks out from the bathroom, appearing as a dark silhouette with the whites of their eyes showing. The next panel reveals the main room, where the curtain in front of the door is sustained on the air, as if the door had just slammed shut. The final panel depicts a keyhole, seen up close, and through it we see the foot-end of a bed, where two large, wiry feet are resting.
Page 3 of 4: The teenager is standing close to the viewer, their back turned. We are outside in the garden. A garden wall separates the lawn from the street, where an old car is parked. The landlady, now wearing a coat, is making her way toward the car, away from the teenager. “Ridiculous,” she says, “I’ve told you, that door is locked.” The teenager replies: “From your side, yes. But…” The landlady interrupts: “Are you suggesting, that my poor old mother, who can barely go to the toilet by herself, is sneaking into your room?” We see a closeup of the landlady’s face, as she rolls her eyes. In the background, the teenager throws out their hands. “Well somebody is!” says the teenager. “Preposterous,” replies the landlady. The teenager goes on: “And that’s not all.” Next, we see three panels in sequence with rounded corners, suggesting a memory or flashback. In the first panel, the teenager is rummaging through a bag of toiletries. Their dialogue continues over the scene: “Some of my toiletries have gone missing.” Next, the teenager is in bed, clasping their face in apparent fear, one eye showing between the fingers. The background is a pattern of concentric circles. The dialogue continues: “I hear creaking and hissing at night.” Next, the teenager’s frowning face is seen in profile as they survey the contents of a pot of butter. The dialogue continues: “And the other day, I found traces in my butter. Like from fingers.” Back in the garden, the landlady raises a warning finger at the teenager. “I’ve heard just about all I can take,” says the landlady. The teenager tries to protest: “But…” and the landlady continues: “I’m late for my night shift. This discussion is over.” The landlady looks over her shoulder with a strangely smug expression. “There have been no unwanted visitors in that apartment,” she says. “Unless you invited them yourself. Have you been doing something you shouldn’t?” The teenager scratches their head as the car drives away.
Page 4 of 4: The teenager is brushing their teeth, glancing anxiously over their shoulder at the dark room behind them. The teenager thinks: “I am not spending another school year in this place. Hopefully I can get something new after summer.” The hissing sound effect from earlier returns, slithering out of the darkness and carrying across the next several panels, as we see the teenager lying in bed, eyes pinched shut, trying to sleep, a wedge of light falling across their head and shoulders. “There’s that noise again,” the teenager thinks. “Like a hissing pipe. And that smell. What is that?” The teenager, in closeup, opens one eye, peeking to the side. In the next panel, they sit up, seen from behind, looking toward the curtain and the door behind it. The hissing sound effects slithers toward the curtain, pointing our direction there. Two long, nasty-looking feet are standing behind the curtain on the chequered floor. The teenager’s terrified eye appears in closeup, menaced by wriggling bolts on all sides. We get a closer look at the big, nasty feet behind the curtain, toes long with long, broken toenails. The comic ends here.
Unwanted Visitor, the second instalment in my series of four-page horror comics.
Enjoy! 👻

That's the impetus behind all advertising and marketing. To manufacture a need by using psychological tools to convince consumers that they need/want something they otherwise would not. That's just how capitalism functions.

Transparent spheres, each containing a flicker of flame, float among the pillars of a ruined yet still beautiful structure. Steps lead up from the sand to a broad pedestal set at the center of the arches. Above it a star hangs low on the horizon. In the immediate foreground, a path of stones winds across a shallow tidal pool. Water reflects the vertical lines of the pillars.
PASSAGE: THE AVATAR (1988)
Acrylic on Canvas - 48" x 48"
Initially inspired by a few notes from a Pink Floyd instrumental track, this came to me while floating in a sensory deprivation tank. 1/4
A colour illustration showing a single character against a plain background. The character is standing facing forward in a calm posture, with their left hand resting on their hip. They appear to be robotic or clad in a type of armour decorated with gold trim and red orbs. Their face is hidden beneath an ornate helmet, as is their left hand, which is visible and appears to be made of metal and engraved with symbols. The background behind the character is a kind of wall, and we can see engravings in the wall that could be symbols, perhaps reminiscent of astrological symbols: circles, trajectories, which could be planets or stars?
