He was the last president of Czechoslovakia from 1989-1992 prior to the dissolution of Czechoslovakia on 31 December. He then became the first president of the Czech Republic from 1993 to 2003. Photographed for Freedom House in NYC in 1991.

I started a project in 2005 making portraits of innocent Iraqi survivors of the United States’ Enhanced Interrogation Program, aka torture, with the intent of showing the human cost of that policy. 20 years on, (some) justice has been served.
