You have to start somewhere, but this is an odd place to start. It's as if Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman in 'Independence Day' saw the aliens blow up NYC and LA, and then sat among the ruins telling each other: "Gosh, there's a lot of rubble about, isn't there? Careful where you step!"

...by a megalomaniac with unbridled control over a platform of angry conspiracy theorists. And there's no collaboration when there is no solidarity with colleagues across the world. Musk must have his fellowship revoked! [3/3]

The Royal Society cites excellence, respect and collaboration among its values. But there's no excellence when there is no academic freedom and scientists are barred by government edict from conducting legitimate research. There's no respect when scientists are threatened with imprisonment... [2/3]

Elon Musk FRS daily trashes the reputation of the @royalsociety.org. Will they respond to Stephen's call and revoke his fellowship?

That sounds rather nice if you also add a sprinkle of nutmeg.

I'm not sure if Popeye's tinned spinach was any tastier than your frozen blocks, but I will say it was the ONLY reason I ate spinach as a child. Now that was in the '90s, more than a decade after the iron theory was disproved, so it just goes to show how long flawed research lingers in the pscyhe!

Yes, one has to be endlessly careful with these things. I always say these are good tools for encouraging transparency, collaboration and open peer review, but they should only be used in combination with other qualitative and quantitative indicators of quality, visibility and impact.

Hence the scenes in Popeye cartoons, in which he chugs a whole tin of spinach before speeding off to rescue Olive Oyl from Bluto.

As we move away from the Journal Impact Factor, tools like @altmetric.com show how much attention research gets in news, social media and policy docs. We subscribe to Altmetric at @imperialcollegeldn.bsky.social Library. We encourage researchers to use it to learn about the visibility of their work.

Finally X'iting the sinking ship across the water.

I chose Bluesky instead of Mastodon or Threads because the research world seems to be coalescing here.

I got up to 300 followers on X. Hope to clear that by 2030, which would be a record-breaking rate of increase in my influence...
