Ecosystem ecology, biogeochemistry, Limnology. Trying to combine fieldwork and modelling. In January, Assistant Professor in Ecosystem Ecology at IceLab in Umeรฅ University (Sweden).
New @science.org paper shows early-2020s methane spike driven mostly by a temporary slowdown in the atmosphereโs methane removal and climate-boosted natural emissions. IceLabโs @grocherros.bsky.social helped quantify methane from running waters, improving understanding of the global methane budget.

It is open access, so go read! I am mostly proud of this figure, which I spent a lot of hours figuring out how to do it

Thanks @jansei.bsky.social for working with me on this, which was inspired by his HBV-lite teaching software!

1. After getting some further insight into changes at NSF (thanks to those who reached out), I deleted a previous post where I tried to make sense of Cheatham's memo as reported in the Science story below.

22.04.2025 18:31 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0The spring flood as the snow melts is the most characteristic part of northern hydrology, but this year there will be no spring flood. We will be back to the data in a few weeks, but I have never seen this before
17.04.2025 14:06 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Today was the first field day in my ERC ARIMETH project! I installed a oxygen and water level sensor in Krycklan. It was a great field day, wearing t-shirt, sunny... But this is so wrong. Mid-april in northern Sweden means a thick snow cover, but this has been an abnormally warm and dry winter.

Check out the coupled O2-CO2 model developed by Jake Diamond and me, out today in JGRB!
The model extends the single-station O2 model by coupling DIC mass balance and carbonate buffering.

Results show
- #LSTM models can use existing data to generate synthetic data for temperate mesic regions
- challenges of transferring relationships learned from data-rich to data-poor sites

Map of global lake distribution, colored by the number of SWOT overpasses per 21 day cycle. There are many lakes with a high number of SWOT overpasses at high northern latitudes, but there are also tens of thousands to more than a million lakes on every continent. Lakes are graphed by latitude and longitude on the edges of the figure.
Do you work on lakes globally? Check out what is, to my mind, the most complete global database of lakes (~6M) and associated attributes, newly published in WRR. Also the basis for SWOT lake data. agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
