This does seem to be a relevant question. Reading the Sun and Guardina pieces side by side it is hard to believe they are describing the same policy. That kind of spin might have worked in 1990s but in a social media ecosystem where anger goes viral is is likely to generate own goals

The Home Secretary says "we have become the destination of choice in Europe, clearly visible to every people smuggler and would-be illegal migrant across the world"

That is a factually untrue claim: the Home Office shows that the UK is fifth, getting 1/10 claims, while Germany gets 1/5 claims

Six weeks since the PM said Britain faced a choice between decency or division and our bad, obviously, for not understanding that he was in fact Team Division

The line “vote for us or you’ll get the far right” doesn’t really work when the policies you’re enacting are barely distinguishable from what the far right propose.

This is a new low from a govt plumbing the depths of performative cruelty in hopes that the public won’t notice they have no answers to the real issues facing this country

A sensible, humane govt would focus on safe routes to prevent people making dangerous small boat crossings

A mass programme of building social housing? A rapid investment in a national care system? Reversing budget cuts to local authorities so they can deliver high standard services? Tax on extreme wealth?

No. Claim vulnerable people on less than £10/day are the source of all our problems.

This rancid trash understands the significance of Labour's anti-refugee policies.

This won’t even work as intended. The people objecting to refugees aren’t asking for people to have to stay longer and jump through more hoops before they’re naturalised. They point blank want anyone not exactly like them kicked out.

A disgusting attack on our universal human rights. To seek to impose a time limit to safety, dignity and refuge is the lowest point. This is not what this government was elected to do.

What is tearing our country apart is successive politicians using some of the most vulnerable people for their nasty political battles and capitulating time and time again to the far right. Offering no solutions but performative cruelty and ushering the right will be this government's legacy.

For Shabana Mahmood to attack some of the most cruelly treated people in the world as having won a "golden ticket" because they manage to get to and claim asylum in Britain is unforgiveable.
