Are we too parochial? Too conservative? Too insular? Is it a poverty mindset? Is it because the population tilts older? Institutional inertia? All of the above? Something else? Blah. It just feels like its never going to get better lately. I'm probably just being overly pessimistic.

As I get older, I get increasingly frustrated with the lack of ambition or sense of urgency when it comes to making change or improvements. Things are more or less the same as they were when I was half my age.

It's pretty underwhelming. Not surprising at all given the interim report given to HRM council and engagement sessions, just underwhelming. No ambition, no vision, just more of the same. All in all feels like a colossal waste of time.

Traffic congestion, appearance of fiscal responsibility (the red herring of cycling infra costs), and fixing a 'dysfunctional' city council's decision (Filmore has been crying to Tim about how no one does what he wants). Naked populism with a strong dose of authoritarian tendencies (it's a pattern).

FWIW, Linux is far more user friendly than it used to be. Linux Mint was built to replicate the Windows user experience as much as possible. If you have enough disk space you could do a dual boot setup to try it out without uninstalling Windows.

Neither of Ted Cruz's parents was from Canada. They lived here for a grand total of 4.5 yrs, and took Ted back to Texas before he turned 4. Also worth pointing out that Marine Atlantic is a federal crown corp. and BC Ferries is a provincially run, publicly owned company... The feds have a lot more say and control over what Marine Atlantic does.

It appears to be driving in reverse. Russian tanks are notoriously slow in reverse due gearbox limitations. This is why they often make a 180 turn when retreating, even if it exposes their weakest armour.

All that said, it is just an old photo, too. The first phase of Monaghan Square still under construction, new armoury/maintenance building missing in Willow Park etc.

Has anyone tried to bring this up with the Downtown Halifax Business Commission? It's definitely not a good look for the city, or the businesses on those streets. Seems like the kind of initiative they could put some of their influence into.

I was a kid living in the valley at the time, so ended up going semi-regularly on school excursions, birthdays etc.. It was definitely mostly locals. CFB Cornwallis closing in the mid 90s didn't help, either. Was a big hit to the local population (and economy) all round.

Most ad blockers allow you to selectively turn them off for certain sites, so easy enough to disable where absolutely necessary or where there's ethical/reasonable/non-invasive advertising. Given the way Chrome is going, probably good to get away from it ASAP.

And yes, he's great. I have no idea how he maintains such a high volume of fresh, topical, and funny material. Maybe I've just gotten used to the bigger names falling back on the same routine for a year or two at a time.

Not a car person, let alone a pickup person, in the slightest, but the Slate EV looks interesting. It's the very reasonable size of an 80s vintage pickup and weighs the same as a Camry EV. Not that my pedestrian self wants to be hit by any of them.

It doesn't even have to be a longer trip. We're just used to antiquated equipment, poorly maintained infrastructure, and freight priority.

I'd love to see Japanese-style business hotels become a thing here. I know its highly unlikely because of the expectations of most North Americans. But personally speaking, i just want clean, comfortable, safe, and reasonably priced. I visit other cities to see the city, not the hotel room.

'A mini-American presidency' is a pretty damning description and should serve as a stark warning in light of current world events. It's a tempting shortcut to 'streamline' decision making, but the current system evolved and is in place for a reason.

While there are rules over what kind of spending qualifies as meeting the target, it doesn't account for inefficiencies or poor decision making. But yeah, we've had it relatively easy for a fairly long time, and tough decisions will have to be made. I agree I'd rather see taxes than cuts.
