Was happy to be greeted by inky caps this am. This mushroom excretes enzymes to digest itself to spread more spores. When the dark spores mix with the digestive fluids, it gives the mushroom an inky appearance. So goth, I love it.

A little belated but I've started a faculty position at Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology department at @ucsantabarbara.bsky.social. I'm absolutely stoked! I'll be recruiting at all levels and will be at #Botany2025
Reach out!

New logo(s) just dropped. Self expression in my research endeavors has been important for me lately. Low key, Tony Hawk pro skater logo was an inspo for these
23.07.2025 03:26 โ ๐ 34 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0I'll have more info in a few weeks when I get back from fieldwork but I'll be recruiting 2 graduate students to begin in 2026 (1 PhD, 1 MS). My lab investigates macroevolutionary dynamics using phylogenetic methods & the fossil record. Please share with students having strong research interests!

This is something Iโve done with @briladwig.bsky.social as broader impact activities for grants. Iโd love to see more academics make zines.

03.04.2025 01:12 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Im so bummed to see this. Cipres had been an incredible computational resource to my research program. 24.01.2025 22:35 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0As a horror fan, I have to share (with permission) this student made zine. It def gives some Junji Ito vibes imo
11.12.2024 20:57 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0While some folks understandably argue that grading is not aligned with the spirit of zines, I had to make a compromise as an incentive. So Students do get EC points for this. I made a rubric that served as a compass. I think students appreciated that structure. Almost all got the max amnt of points
10.12.2024 18:22 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I think this gave students the opportunity to connect with the learning material (biodiversity) while conveying meaning in their own individualized ways. Which I think is empowering. Will def make this an integral part of class.
