They did a really great job with the renovation about 15 years ago. It was a bit tired inside when I was growing up but it’s really nice now.

Field Notes: Lys Kernow, Redruth + news (21 May 2025)
Exploring examples of C20 modernism in Redruth, Cornwall. Plus an unexpected Hepworth and a roundup of local news.
Latest field notes just dropped into inboxes. In which I go to Redruth in Cornwall and find:
a 1960s factory
a 1969 supermarket
a 1935 cinema
a 1937 drill hall.
Thanks to @ma-228.bsky.social for the suggestions on what to look for!

Just out of the centre there’s the wonderful 21st C Kresen Kernow, on the site of the former brewery, and also the ginormous (for Redruth) J I Case factory on the Cardrew Industrial estate (early 70s I think, now RR Transport and Storage)

In Redruth town centre there’s the 1930s Regal Cinema, also a slightly quirky late 60s/early 70s Tesco (now Iceland), which was built after they demolished the very grand Victorian Tabb’s Hotel.
