anyways, have a peaceful shot of a now perfectly fine tank.

wanted to blog about setting up a nano tank (which i did, still cycling), but god damn. after being on emergency watch for the big tank, i didnt feel like doing anything this week lol.

i feel so sorry for the shrimps (most of them are gone, at least i cant find most- might be inside the filter), but i asked if these meds were safe for invertebrates. "oh yeah, they are!" you know. makes me really wanna google next time and order online instead of trusting small shops. SORRY.

oh and then, after the medication, i turn on my co2 again bc i can see my plants suffering. only for the fucking co2 thing to go APESHIT and blast an ungodly amount of it into the tank. takes me two days to reclabrate it. oh i also work 9 hours a day lol + 2 hours of commuting!

THIS SHIT HURTS MY BACK, OK. i also have to GET NEW WATER IN too. my unathletic ass was spent, yo. next two days, i change 50% of the water once a day. then it finally gets to sufficient low levels, but not as low as it was before (almost zero). i also have to really reduce feeding.

my tank is well cycled since almost two years, so all i can do is remove the basically poisoned water and wait for the bacteria in the filter to get everything into balance again and remove the nitrite by themselves. i'm talking about like, 90% of water chance. about 100 litres.

5 days of mandatory treatment, at least only the neons are affected. removing a lots of dead shrimp. everything looks fine. for a day. then the water quality dips. huge nitrite spike. something that can happen after medication. nitrite blocks oxygen from being absorbed, fish basically suffocate.

turns out they are not safe for shrimps. i had to remove a LOT of dead (and not quite cheap!) shrimps from the filter. why do i listen to people whose day-job it is to sell this stuff, it's not like they'd know what they sell or something.

of course i notice this on a saturday evening, so nothing i can do until monday. and by the time i've had all the meds and equipment on monday evening - they reduced most of their white spots by themselves?! just to be sure, i still put in the meds. big mistake.

the tank is pretty empty now, i might restock it with a true classic: neon tetras. but now for the good news: ANUBIAS CAN BLOOM?! apparently yes, and right there in my tank. i didnt even know?! bonus pics other tank frens.

bad and good #kitfeesh news this week: i rehomed my seven rosy tetras because the gender ratio did not turn out well. what were supposed to be 2 males with 5 females turned out to be 5 males with 2 females. lot's of uh, territorial bloodshed once they grew up...

photo of a lifesized, lifelike figure of a deinotherium. which is um... imagine an elephant, but with tiny ears. now imagine no tusks where they usually are, but instead at the end of its lower lip, pointing downward and inwards. yes, it looks absurd. also it's HUGE. easily reaches 5 meters/16 feet in height. also there's a tiny baby deinotherium tagging along next to it.

a lifelike and lifesized sculpture of an agnotherium. ummm, it looks like... it has a hyena-like head, but with small ears. the rest of it looks like a long-limbed, shaggy dog with bear paws.

a lifesized and lifelike sculpture of a chalicotherium. i don't even know where to begin describing it. for the head, imagine a hornless rhino, and very fluffy. its forelegs are much longer than its hindlegs. on its forelegs it has humongous claws. they're so long that it has to walk on its knuckles.

mainz is also well known as the birthplace of gutenberg, the man who invented letterpress printing. also not something i particularly care about, BUT the museum of natural history has been shrunk significantly to exhibit gutenberg stuff instead... sigh... what IS left is brilliant though #kitontour

been to mainz today, a city founded by romans as a military camp. although i studied archaeology, i'm not fond of romans at all, lol... my main goal was to visit the museum of natural history. here's some impressions of temple ruins and a printing press #kitontour
