Day out with the group. First stop at the Museum fΓΌr Brot und Kunst to see its current exhibition βWinzige Gigantenβ (tiny giants) which includes pieces created by our very own PhD student Karo introducing our work on the impact of fertilization on the soil microbiome (project IMPALA)

Excellent day. Our very own PhD student Rostand successfully defended his thesis on the impact of organic fertilization on the soil microbiome of grassland ecosystems. Congratulations Rostand, well done.

Finally out: the first paper of our #IMPALA project on the impact of organic fertilization on microbiomes in grassland ecosystems. Here we analyse 16S amplicons. Soon to come #bacteriocin gene clusters in metagenomes of the same samples

PNGaseA-mediated N-glycan stripping from peptides by infant-derived Bifidobacterium bifidum
N-glycans are highly common sources of nutrition for human colonic-dwelling bacteria. These microbes have evolved a several methods to remove N-glycans from proteins; herein we describe the biochemica...

We characterised the structure of a PNGaseA superfamily member from Bifidobacterium bifidum LMG13195 and highlight its preference for N-glycan structures attached to a peptide, rather than to a native or denatured protein π« @imibirmingham.bsky.social

So true. And if you want to hear how we try to produce #bacteriocins and other antimicrobial/antiviral peptides using a biotech workhorse organism, come to my talk tomorrow at 11:30h in the Biotechniology for Health Session (Amber 1&2 hall) of #FEMS2025. Or to Poster 395.16P on Thursday.

Once had the same argument with aomw guys from the US. Main result of a paper in Nucleic Acids Research was an E. coli strain to make extracts for SLiCE cloning (similar to Golden Gate Cloning and Gibson Assembly). Strain was commercialized after publication.

During steps 1 and 2 we got some really nice isolates with potent antimicrobial activity. And whilst fishing in the dark we also picked up some rally bright, luminescent guys. Back to lab, we are now doing the sequencing part to identify the biosynthetic gene clusters.
