PNGaseA-mediated N-glycan stripping from peptides by infant-derived Bifidobacterium bifidum
N-glycans are highly common sources of nutrition for human colonic-dwelling bacteria. These microbes have evolved a several methods to remove N-glycans from proteins; herein we describe the biochemica...

We characterised the structure of a PNGaseA superfamily member from Bifidobacterium bifidum LMG13195 and highlight its preference for N-glycan structures attached to a peptide, rather than to a native or denatured protein ๐ซ @imibirmingham.bsky.social

So true. And if you want to hear how we try to produce #bacteriocins and other antimicrobial/antiviral peptides using a biotech workhorse organism, come to my talk tomorrow at 11:30h in the Biotechniology for Health Session (Amber 1&2 hall) of #FEMS2025. Or to Poster 395.16P on Thursday.

Once had the same argument with aomw guys from the US. Main result of a paper in Nucleic Acids Research was an E. coli strain to make extracts for SLiCE cloning (similar to Golden Gate Cloning and Gibson Assembly). Strain was commercialized after publication.

During steps 1 and 2 we got some really nice isolates with potent antimicrobial activity. And whilst fishing in the dark we also picked up some rally bright, luminescent guys. Back to lab, we are now doing the sequencing part to identify the biosynthetic gene clusters.

The system described in 1962 in Aequorea victoria by Osamo Shimomura to start the success of GFP as the most widely used reporter - now put together by synthetic biology to give a set of 20 colours. Amazing.

Interesting study by the Kovaฤs group showing that production of surfactin, a non-ribosomal lipopeptide supresses production of the bacteriocin subtilosin A by both autocrine and paracrine mechanisms. Looks like counterregulation of two antimicrobial peptides

Great work by the Drescher group showing that various Gram pos and neg bacteria sense peptidoglycan as a danger signal and protect themselves by producing ECM and formation of biofilms. The involves c-di-GMP signalling.
But what is the receptor? A bacterial TLR?
