So this event allows all those little programs to unite and pool their talent, students and alumni, while employers, agencies, and orgs can recruit from anywhere in the country or world!

A view through the historic community library building in Muskegon, Michigan. A long open room with an arched ceiling spans a long way to the end which features arched windows. Murals adorn the long walls amid shelves of books. The room is warm, bright, and snug.

This pool of talent and all they doβ€”for creative and smart growth, wise planning, and placemakingβ€”are invisible to universities’ admin because there isn’t a spreadsheet bubble that captures the value of hundreds of small professional programs, from skilled trades to doctoral-level academic experts.

These fields support $1B in permitting, planning, development, and compliance work in #EnvironmentalServices; also within a $1T contribution of the #ArtsAndCulture sector just in the US economy alone.

But most hiring is local/regional and by word-of-mouth. That’s crazy.

I’d like to edit now that I’ve found the creator of the image I shared: Samuel Miller McDonald. He posted that image on Twitter/X in 2020, but I won’t link to that network. He’s an author and you can find him there or on Facebook @sjmmcd.

Because Sharkey had corrupted their role and turned them into a support force for his gangs of Ruffians. It was the last part of the Scouring of the Shire, and Peter Jackson cut that part from the movie.

By gathering all the small programs nationwide, we create a pool of candidates that attract lots of employers- large and small. Connecting them with students and grads otherwise excluded from the book room of national conferences.

The tradition that the university does not assert copyright over your work is not the same thing as them not having legal claim to the copyright.

There are some areas where there is no clear legal decision to provide guidance. So falling back to the broader decisions is needed. Does your contract say you have a responsibility to do research, then your employer gives you tools to do that research, like a web-connected computer, library access?

And they’d hold liabilities on that as well as rights. Plus they knew it would make faculty mad. So they returned the rights.

Excepting specific items, such as software code, where the university retained copyright. There are specific legal requirements for the question of work-for-hire or independent agent work. But our university realized they would have to track every bit of IP out there. Every blog and essay.

I’m pretty sure that US copyright law is clear that university faculty are employees and all employees work is the IP of the company. That means research and classroom work. We worked through that and our university senate got the admin to agree to a policy that returned most IP, including syllabi.

I see what you did there #FTC and #RTX…. Good job with the #Decode competition about #robotics and #archaeology- you avoided #treasure, #tombs, and grave-robbing tropes. The competition requires the teams to pay attention to the relationships between artifacts, not just collecting things. Well done!
