(Meant to say impact *is* v different, above)

โ€ฆand in very very reductive terms, if you have visual taste that means you might also have other artistic taste, which means you might also have made something really good with that taste.

Or not! But it does help at least pique a bit of curiosity.

The impact of traditional press isnโ€™t v different to what it once was so this isnโ€™t me saying hereโ€™s a magic bullet or anything. Also many brilliant games look terrible but have some magical quality to them that matters far more. But if I go โ€œphwoarโ€ that signifies you at least have tasteโ€ฆ

I hate that itโ€™s this black and white sometimes but honestly: if your gameโ€™s key/store art looks like this there is a significantly increased chance it will catch my eye when Iโ€™m planning what we might cover.

Difficulty done differently: Cairn and Baby Steps deliver kinder, more generous masocore Difficulty might always be the topic of the day in video games. Cairn and Baby Steps feel like the latest in a growing alternative approach.

โ€‹I found Cairn and Baby Steps to be revelations. Masocore without the punishing boss encounters or pinpoint platforming. For @eurogamer.bsky.social, I wrote about a kinder, gentler breed of difficult games.

Ugh man I'm so sorry. Beyond absurd. Hope we still get to read you and that you land something deservedly excellent. Thoughts to your colleagues as well.

You can review me, but the moment you let your personal opinion get in the way of objectively reviewing my wordread, just know you've just lost all credibility as a critic critic!

Just for reference (and not to make any argument either way), a salary of $75k in NYC is equivalent to roughly ยฃ33k in Brighton, UK when adjusted for cost of living

Many international visitors are skipping GDC amid cost concerns and US safety fears GDCโ€™s organiser has told us it is working to make the show safer and more affordable, but industry chatter suggests international GDC attendance will nosedive this year.

Not much I can do about this but GameRantโ€™s five minute re-write of this story I worked on for a week is on the front page of Reddit steering all of the traffic away from the original, which is here: mobilegamer.biz/many-interna...

The 94 most exciting games of 2026 Eurogamer's list of the many, many brilliant-looking game's we're anticipating the most in 2026.

Iโ€™m away with family for a couple weeks (no, xmas was not enough) but saw this has gone live and wanted to shout out the team for great suggestions, loads of write-ups, and the help of @dompepin.bsky.social & co for the finishing touches while Iโ€™m out.

Year ahead looks mega. If it all sticksโ€ฆ

Thank you to everyone who read or contributed to Eurogamer this year (and major apologies to every pitch I didnโ€™t reply to, which is not how I like to operate. Itโ€™s been A Year). Everything considered Iโ€™m so happy with where the site is, and couldnโ€™t be prouder of everyone I get to work with.

There's also a more important point here, which really takes me to the actual point at hand. The thing that matters is the novelty. Santa Ragione, of all studios in video games right now, is at the forefront of experimenting with the form. It's experimenting with how games are made, and experimenting with the games it makes. And in video games, time and again, it's been proven to us that experimentation, risk-taking, invention, whatever you call it, is everything. And when entities of outsized power, whatever the form, begin to impede that process, it is every single layer of this industry that suffers.

And this, finally, is the real point at hand. I am stating the obvious by saying this is wrong, that Valve ought to have not only a set of clear guidelines that it offers to all developers, but that it explains to them clearly when required. Payment providers should not decide what art does or does not get access to a paying audience - and therefore what gets made at all. Vast chunks of creative culture should not be owned by governments - any governments, let alone those that are autocratic, and that actively practice censorship and oppression. People who make video games, or any form of entertainment, should not have to self-censor in advance, which given its invisibility is perhaps the most dangerous consequence of all. There is so much to be lost here, and so much that we may never know we lost at all. All of this, again, is obvious. But at a time where the obvious things feel somehow less obvious than they did before, it feels more important than ever to just say it out loud.

(I didn't write exactly this - Joshua's much more concise/clear-headed here, and I am guilty of getting very high-minded about it myself. And, tbh, I found the throughline thought as hard to find in writing as all the readers probably did...

But I *almost* did! And people Did Not Like That!)
