Absolutely not. I’m a Marine infantry officer and this was never okay even when people looked the other way. Marines have no business associating themselves with the SS. I don’t care if you say it stands for Scout Sniper and not Schutzstaffel and just think it looks cool; it’s beyond tainted.

Out of five planning exercises in CSC, only the first one puts the students in a Marine HQ using MCPP. The rest put them in a component or JTF HQ using JPP. They are being educated as joint officers, not Marines (and only half the class are Marines).

They can do that because they’re still extremely small.

Agree it would be an unmitigated good to endow them, I just don’t see it replacing PME.

Just did a quick search, but it looks like SAIS runs a 2-year MA program which graduates 300 students per year. For that to replace resident ILS alone, it would need to be cut down to one year and be replicated at 8 other universities.

USMC CSC, the smallest ILS, has 200+ resident students a year. Thousands more do the non-resident program. You think civilian education has the capacity to pick that up?

Do you think the reason more military history is virtually non-existent in American civilian academia is because PME is hogging all the professors? Do you really think DoD could or would even consider solving that problem with an endowment?

Agree. There’s the issue of recording the data but then how you make it useful. Watching and analyzing game film is a skill that has to be learned and honed. It’s one very few mil professionals currently have, but one I think we could quickly learn from sports professionals if we prioritize it.

The question of time horizon is one I’m going to bring up, but we will delve further into it in a later seminar on force design and force development. For the limited predictions I’m making in this lecture (for the purpose of stimulating discussion), I’m focusing on the next five to ten years.
