Today Elections Alberta requested $13.5 million to be able to administer recalls and referendum.

The UCP committee in charge revised their request to just over $1 million.

And then voted it through.

The UCP just defunded recall/referendum.

Part of a general UCP policy of gutting or defunding (or in some cases both) accountability mechanisms. We see the same thing in access to information where inadequate funding leads to delays & dysfunction as demonstrated by @drewyewchuk.bsky.social in many @ablawg.bsky.social posts.

Sharing an outcome of our ongoing Calgary Urban Methane Emissions Measurement Testbed (CURMET) project (https://www.curmet.ca/): urban methane source category attribution 👇. Using long-term air measurements from Calgary, Alberta, we applied Positive Matrix Factorization to identify where the city’s methane (CH₄) comes from. What we found: 1. Natural gas leaks and combustion dominate Calgary’s methane emissions — 81% ± 35%, far higher than bottom-up inventories suggest. 2. Colder months: emissions rise with residential space heating 😰. 3. Warmer months: waste-related methane roughly doubles due to microbial activity 🦠. 4. Petroleum processing sources, though smaller, are consistent. These results show that cities play an important role in methane mitigation and that targeted efforts on the natural gas supply chain could deliver real benefits.
