I care deeply about: (i) air, πŸ’¦, and soil; (ii) the animals and 🌱 that these resources support; and (iii) describing compelling scientific questions and insights to a variety of audiences. https://ocr.ucsf.edu/people/gabe-murphy

Think you understand Scottie Scheffler? Think again.

One of several really thoughtful, honest reflections from Scottie Scheffler.

Being the best golfer in the world is "is not a fulfilling life. It’s fulfilling from the sense of accomplishment, but it’s not fulfilling from a sense of the deepest places of your heart.”

100% agree @nicolecrust.bsky.social.
Equally strong recommendation for another book (roughly) in this same genre - Kathryn Schulz's 'Lost and Found'.

Read the Politics and Opinion sections of any one newspaper with a skeptical eye, and, when possible, sampel the Politics and Opinions sections of multiple papers. (It's both interesting, and informative, to see what is and isn't said in the NYT and WSJ, for example...)

do read the Timesβ€” they have enormous resources and great reportersβ€” but read the Politics and Opinion sections with a skeptical eye. And then read indep political news too- TPM, the Prospect, the Guardian, the Inquirer, ProPublica, etc.

Thanks for sharing this @rdhernand.bsky.social; this finally made it 100% clear (if it wasn't already) that I and others that have been watching from the sidelines need to jump into the fray. It's 'go time'.

I have learned that the directors of ALL: PREP, IMSD, and IRACDA programs across the country have received similar cancelation notices. This follows previous cancellations of MARC and URISE programs. This further dismantles the mechanisms that enable scientific training opportunities for SO MANY.

Many people, including academics, don't understand what F&A is for. Please share to help.

1) Translate to "overhead" in common business accounting:
60% IDC => 60/160 = 37.5% overhead (low!)

2) Infographic explaining what it's for, linked here:

My wish: That every scientist who is passionately advocating for science here will take their same message and also broadcast it in some other venue.

We need to get the message out to those who haven’t yet heard it (and are not yet convinced).

Please consider it πŸ™

Not exactly 'broadcasting', but I've reached out to two Republican-leaning folks in my circle:
β€’Β One didn't know what the NIH (or NSF) does and was open to learning more -> an opportunity to inform.
β€’Β The other is very familiar with NIH, but wasn't aware how this change will impact biotech.

Here’s a strategy: 1) establish the frames, what problems will these changes cause, how will they impact communities; 2) inspire people to use those frames to tell their own stories of their families or communities are impacted; 3) amplify those stories.

Agree with Stephens that Dems should 'get to know Trump voters, and not just through data analysis or comments by their most idiotic, caricaturish champions. If Democrats continue to stereotype those voters as a bunch of racist, misogynistic yahoos, they will be unable to understand the country.'

Engage Republican-leaning family / friends with (i) verifiable info and (2) your opinion: 'Destroying the NIH, NSF, CDC, FDA, and USAID will (I) not save much $ and (iI) have a hugely negative impact…'
[A family member responded well to this, and even admitted he'd heard of the CDC but not NIH/NSF.]

So, what can scientists do?

- Talk to the public; try to drive public attention.
- Find other scientists to talk to and work with.
- Get universities and rich ppl involved.
- Work on the science attacks - but weave them together with the constitutional attacks.

More tomorrow. Be well.

When I was a Hill staffer in 2009, a Dem trifecta was trying to pass universal healthcare. In response, Senate GOP released a memo detailing all of the tactics they in the minority could use to delay the effort as much as possible. I'm recirculating that 2009 GOP memo here. Take inspiration from it.

EXCLUSIVE: NSF starts vetting all grants to comply with Trump’s orders Grantee accounts remain frozen, while union accuses NSF of ignoring rules governing peer review

Exclusive: NSF this week began to search through billions of dollars of grants the agency has already awarded for anything touching on topics that President Donald Trump has criticized. And NSF has blocked grantees and trainees from accessing funds while the review is underway. scim.ag/3El0NZh

Purple exists only in our brains Most colors represent a single wavelength of light. But your brain invents purple to deal with wavelengths from opposite ends of the visible spectrum.

Did you know…
Purple isn’t real.
It’s a pigment of the imagination!

Proprioception - Wikipedia

My lab has a tradition that each week one person contributes edits to a Wikipedia page relevant to their scientific work, and then presents it briefly at lab meeting (and we clap). A few of my favorites:

Started off this morning emailing my Senators and Congressman about the NIH and the potential damage being done by unnecessary disruptions.

They need to hear from us loud and clear. Constituents matter to them as one of the primary purposes of a politician is to get re-elected (and its their job).

Another reason: the director of media relations for the CDC's Office of Communications, Benjamin Haynes, said "This is a short pause to allow the new team to set up a process for review and prioritization. There are exceptions for announcements that HHS divisions believe are mission critical."
