The laborious art of #conlang creation?
12.10.2025 00:06 — 👍 4 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0I have several Excel tabs for my conlang's dictionary and derivations, but building an entire grammar in it is wild lol
20.08.2025 23:19 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Dzidzilalich was the name of a Lushootseed speaking settlement in what is now Seattle. Likely a borrowing that retained similarity to the Ld pronunciation?

The preceedings of the International Conference on Salish & Neighboring Languages is now up. Check it out. Especially for the historical linguists, there is a neat paper by Hank Nater on the origin of the so-called pharyngeal fricatives of Interior Salish.

Lol classic conlanging. I use a doc and there are more comments of "update this" than I could ever get around to fixing if I'm to spend any time actually using the language!

I'd frozen the conlang for 8 months, during which I couldn't make any changes. This forced me to write in the language, use it, find what worked and what was awkward. I'm now in a period where I can make changes. Not too many, but it's an opportunity to clean up some morpho-phonology and vocab.

Just thought of another one - "taste" in middle voice as in "it tastes tart". This construction may have been inadvertently borrowed and applied to "eat" as in "it eats tart". It makes sense if trying to zhuzh up one's vocab but still getting across the same meaning
30.05.2025 16:26 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Cooking show language is so interesting, sociolinguistically. People are clearly trying to balance using highly technical terms, avoiding cliche, appearing current/relevant, and being down to earth. The resultant language is often beautifully convoluted

25.05.2025 21:06 — 👍 1 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Weirdly was just thinking this today. They use it all the time on cooking shows like "the cake eats a little dry". I was looking for examples other than needing and adverbs and your polarity focus is interesting.
25.05.2025 20:57 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0On showcase here is the "transitive of non-control" prevalent in Salish languages. It's used in opposition to the other transitive marker. It has meanings like "managed to..", "finally did..", "ended up..". The idea being that the event was not entirely within the control of the agent.

I've interfered in generated roots a bunch too. On my list is developing ideophones / onomatopoeia further too. Just need to settle on a pattern I like that doesn't look too much like the Japanese "pera-pera" type ones

Great approach. I agree there's no competition between conlangs, my comment was more about how different lojban and toki pond are in structure :)
17.05.2025 21:14 — 👍 2 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Thank you, really enjoy seeing others' process. I too started with the basics but admit that abstract concepts can be quite tricky. I'm trying to stay somewhat faithful to the Salish lexical suffix approach too, which has been very fun to incorporate into the conlang. Best of luck with the revision!
