Haven't seen this in a while, but I remember being pleasantly surprised by it.

I've read his books on "High Noon" and "Midnight Cowboy", and they were excellent. This is on my list, too. Glad you recommend it.

Today I visited a brass disc installed in a sidewalk by the Department of Public Works to mark the geographic center of the city. A quirky little novelty, but a nice hike.

I feel like radical tonal/stylistic shifts in entertainment were more accepted then, particularly in the you'll-laugh/you'll-cry melodramatics of many '30s films, or anthology or variety types of shows. But you're probably right about them just trying to cash in. LOL

I'll admit I only know who two of the authors are (Vicki Baum and Zane Grey), but those alone seem like an odd mix.

Discovering Tom Lehrer's songbook in my teens was a revelation, a window into what felt like an adult world both naughty and sophisticated, a world I couldn't wait to join. Though he stepped away from that part of his career decades ago, I still felt a twinge of sadness today that he'd died. 💙📚

Also, it's funny that Betsy Blair would be cast as a woman who is so unattractive that she gives pause even to Ernest Borgnine, when in real life she was married to Gene Kelly.

If you can find it, the original 1953 teleplay of "Marty" is worth seeing. It's a less polished piece overall, but it has moving performances (Rod Steiger and Nancy Marchand), and it's interesting to see how Chayevsky expanded his own story into the movie.

Years ago, my hobby was writing to celebrities for their autographs. Not only did Cleo Laine reply, she bothered to write a kind note apologizing for the delay, which I've come to treasure even more than the separate signature card. RIP
