Video Stores, Revival Houses, and the Future of Movies The documentary β€œVideoheaven” and MOMA’s series β€œA Theater Near You” consider how people watch films and why it matters.

β€œYet, though the rise of video rentals shrank the public space of movies by keeping more viewers at home, the video store arguably expanded the public space of movies by its ubiquity, covering the commercial landscape much more densely than movie theatres did.”

This is why we’re out in the streets - you cannot defend the actions of people who would lie to kidnap 1st graders. Any human being with a conscience is going to take that personally.

kind of just endlessly sad and grieving that there are so few voices in the public sphere making the basic principled argument that immigration is an affirmative good in every way and the best way for this country to serve humanity is to welcome people who want or need to leave their homes

Sending out thousands of national guard to crush a protest of a few hundred at most is not strength, it's weakness. Power doesn't panic. If there were hundreds of thousands in the streets, they wouldn't be able to stop it. Those on the side of democracy outnumber them.

Hey everyone, you want to know a fun factoid?

Almost all of the federal agents currently in LA aren’t local, which means they’re staying at a hotel somewhere. Hotels have fire alarms.

Wanna know another fun fact?

If protests start popping off in other states, they can’t be everywhere at once.

1. Support trans rights no matter what because it is the right thing to do.
2. People respond to leaders who have clear convictions, not poll-based triangulation. That’s what leadership *is*. You lead, others follow.

In the aftermath of sobbing at a funeral a few weeks ago I spent a lot of time thinking about the grief debt. Grieving we owe - to ourselves, I guess - from the pandemic that just keeps piling up, interest compounding in the worst ways.

Could You Prove You’re a Citizen? For Americans wrongfully detained by ICE, it can be nearly impossible to escape.

"While the law is clear β€” ICE is not to arrest U.S. citizens β€” agents have such significant discretion, and such little accountability, that, in practice, the first opportunity a citizen will have to meaningfully contest their arrest is at their first court appearance."

Shhh. Republicans are trying to repeal Obamacare again. Sort of. They’re not branding it an Obamacare repeal this time around, but congressional Republicans are pursuing cuts to programs that are part of the 15-year-old health-care law.

Here's something everybody should be paying attention to: Congressional Republicans are trying to weaken the Affordable Care Act and put millions of people at risk of losing their health care. Call your Senators and tell them we can't let that happen.

Statement from Tristan Kern de Gonzales
Husband of Jonathan Joss

My husband Jonathan Joss and I were involved in a shooting while checking the mail at the site of our former home. That home was burned down after over two years of threats from people in the area who repeatedly told us they would set it on fire. We reported these threats to law enforcement multiple times and nothing was done.

Throughout that time we were harassed regularly by individuals who made it clear they did not accept our relationship. Much of the harassment was openly homophobic.

When we returned to the site to check our mail we discovered the skull of one of our dogs and its harness placed in clear view. This caused both of us severe emotional distress. We began yelling and crying in response to the pain of what we saw.

While we were doing this a man approached us. He started yelling violent homophobic slurs at us. He then raised a gun from his lap and fired.

Jonathan and I had no weapons. We were not threatening anyone. We were grieving. We were standing side by side. When the man fired Jonathan pushed me out of the way. He saved my life.

Jonathan is my husband. He gave me more love in our time together than most people ever get. We were newlyweds. We picked Valentines Day. We were in the process of looking for a trailer and planning our future.

He was murdered by someone who could not stand the sight of two men loving each other.

I was with him when he passed. I told him how much he was loved.

To everyone who supported him, his fans, his friends, know that he valued you deeply. He saw you as family.

My focus now is on protecting Jonathan’s legacy and honoring the life we built together.

If your concern is how someone coped with trauma or how loudly they speak when recounting injustice and being ignored by authorities then you never truly cared about my husband.

Jonathan saved my life. I will carry that forward. I will protect what he built.
