It's not just the rightwing in its own media bubble that will revel in fascism. Good people, decent people--people we know--will adapt, are adapting into increasingly walled off social realities. 9/n

Fascism is totalizing in the sense that it produces a new total reality, a new normal, but it is not totalizing in 'coming for us all' even tho the sphere of who it comes for expands more widely than what it was under liberal regimes (thinking of the US here). 8/n

They will come for more of us and many of us, but those they come for will generally be marked as already on the outside in some way. And there will always be perfectly reasonable seeming explanations/justifications for what happened to them. 7/n

This--not coming for us all--is perhaps actually a strength of auth and fascist regimes. It intensifies different social realities. It produces a political impasse, a breakdown where there should be solidarity. 6/n

They find it implausible. They don't see it around them. It is beyond the scope of their imagination bc in fact they do live in a different day to day reality. 5/n

Fascism produces its own niche social spheres. This is why, if you until recently you went into certain circles in Pakistan for instance, these good people, decent people, just don't believe any of the stories about the disappearances, the tortures, the destruction. 4/n

This to me is a lesson in authoritarianism and its cousin fascism. We imagine that rn it begins with ICE taking Latinx and but eventually they will "come for us all." But the thing is, they usually don't. We are waiting for the other shoe to drop. 3/n

When that happened, there were people, good people, who thought there must be a reg bureaucratic reason, or that he shldn't have been so loud in his activism -- essentially a million explanations/justifications for how/why it happened other than the obvious: the military & authoritarianism. 2/

This reminds me of the cancellation of a domestic flight ticket of an antiwar leader inside Pakistan some years ago. It's not the only time; it happens there bc of the inordinate power of the military & intel agencies (thanks to the US). It got me thinking abt the current US moment 1/

I spoke to a Venezuelan woman who was arrested in this raid and later released with her 4yo son. She said agents broke down their door, pointed guns at them and made sexualized remarks about Venezuelan women. When she returned to her apartment it was boarded up and all her possessions were gone.
