To the extent that Z had some leverage he didn't utilize, I think it was not engaging in a public fight with NYPDโ€”i.e., by retaining Tisch.

By brokering this fragile truce with NYPD and the billionaire-owned, corporate-conglomerate lobby, Z functionally gave NYPD license to maintain its status quo.

I couldn't listen to it either. But every time this gets posted, I want to know were the parents of this child informed? What about the other parents of black and brown kids? Have those kids been left in danger to prioritize the privacy of this teacher?

Across the US, people are dismantling and destroying Flock surveillance cameras Anger over ICE connections and privacy violations is fueling the sabotage. PLUS: 10,000 drivers call on Uber to repay stolen wages, a man is arrested at a public hearing about a data center and more.

Across the US, people fed up with Flock cameras surveilling their communities, and with local governments that are often unwilling to listen to concerns over privacy violations and ICE data sharing practices, are taking matters into their own handsโ€”and tearing them down.

Yesterday, those who teach Intro to Sociology at Florida colleges (as opposed to universities) received a ready-made curriculum from the state and were ordered to teach it.

Yes, you read that correctly. The *state* is enforcing a curriculum on college profs, complete w/ the following restrictions:

This research by Benn Jordan should haunt us all. He dug into the effects that the inaudible sounds coming from data centers have on people. It's grim.

Public libraries are actually existing examples of the world we want. We should not have to fight for them under a democratic socialist mayor.

@nycplan.org is organizing a response. Tell Mamdani to make good on his commitment to baseline funding for libraries!

Libraries Are for Everyone: Invest in Libraries New York City's public libraries offer vital support to all, regardless of background, income, birthplace, or beliefs.

This funding increase to 0.5% is a core demand of NYC PLAN - one which has been amplified by our library systems to help ensure that every branch has the staffing and resources to provide robust services to their communities.

Help us get NYC libraries the raise they deserve

Remember the key is the percentage allocated based on the city expense budget. So Mayor Mamdani is ACTUALLY allocating 0.39% of that to public libraries. LESS THAN ADAMS & also MUCH LESS THAN THE 0.5% that he ran on. Remember too that the ACTUAL FY26 budget was $523 million [after budget dance].

On Nov. 16, a mental health counselor recorded in Kamillaโ€™s medical records that her mother reported the girl had lost her appetite after being โ€œserved food that contained worms.โ€

A week later, the couple said, children were told to gather in the gym for what they believed would be a Thanksgiving celebration. Excitement spread as families saw tables set with turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, they said. The children waited expectantly. But when a parent asked when the celebration would begin, Oksana said, staff told them the holiday meal was for employees, not detainees.

The children, she said, watched despondently as the feast was packed away.

On Thanksgiving, the immigrant children held at the Dilley detention center gathered in the gym for what they thought was a holiday feast.

The kids salivated over a spread of turkey, sandwiches, pastries and pies, a family told me.

But the food wasnโ€™t for detainees โ€” it was for the staff.

Examining the bodies returned to their people after the most recent so-called ceasefire, Palestinian doctors noted that, in some bodies โ€œthe rib cage and ribs were clipped with a sharp sawโ€”a medical saw, a bone sawโ€”and the sternum, along with the central part of the ribs, [were] lifted to allow for the removal of the heart and lungs without damage to the organ being taken.โ€ Organ procurement, with few exceptions like skin and cornea, requires that the body be either aliveโ€”via brain deathโ€”or just-deadโ€”via circulatory death. It is plausible that some Palestinian prisonersโ€™ torture led to brain death. It is also possible their torturers felt no need to wait. Palestinian witnesses have reported that some prisoners were alive at the time they were taken for organ extraction. In one batch of bodies, the organs removed were those commonly transplanted: heart, liver, lungs. The transplant surgeon waits for a person to die; the soldier canโ€™t. The settler surgeon wields his mastery over the body to serve the state. Here, the surgeon acts asโ€”isโ€”a soldier.
