Appearance of John Burton, who died recently, on the Tony Blair doc @channel4tv.bsky.social. We were once on the NE Cultural Consortium together. (He & George Gill of Gateshead much underestimated by the London culturati for having the wrong accents)

Underviewer Herman Carl Schier (1857-1882) - Find... Although he is buried at Sunderland Bridge, a room at St Thomas' Church, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, is named after mining engineer Herman Carl Schier, who died leading a rescue attempt following an explosion at Trimdon Grange Colliery in 1882. There is also a plaque in his memory. England, Select Births and Christenings,...

There's a bit about him and the colliery explosion on the FindAGrave website www.findagrave.com/memorial/188...

It's quite stretchy, but I was tiny when I was 15 so it must have been unfashionably roomy

Morning London peeps. A friend’s daughter is starting Masters at UCL in September. She’d appreciate any leads on a room to rent that’d be available then

Hope you have a good day anyway. The sun has also put in an appearance here, though it is also still freezing. So much more cheering though

🌊 Tynemouth, February 1996

Thirty years ago Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen photographed this tidal pool for Writing in the Sand. The series is often remembered for beach life, but it also traces erosion and pollution along the North East coast.

I can't quite match that but when I went for the same job post-decimalisation the arithmetic test was still in "old money". No automated tills for change-giving in those days

β€œ#York, The Castle 1851” is an OS rarity, & from our sample you can see why.
Some early OS maps were so detailed that floorplans of prominent buildings were included. It was soon noted that it wasn't a good idea to have the plans of jails etc publicly available!

I agree. Was discussing him with a couple of (not particularly political) people earlier. All agreed he was sincerely in it for the public service but struggles to manage/control the power-hungry wonks around him

I've only been to MK once, for some business with the New Towns archive, which was accomplished without the need to stay over. It certainly seemed pleasant enough, and the archivist was very welcoming
