Tradition should be like a torch to pass on, not ashes to be admired. Learn from the past, plan for the future but live in the present. Nostalgia is a cancer.

It’s our job to complain until we know. That is what keeps the pressure on them to do more that we don’t know about

Google Skuten, Dovern and Glan, as the projects were called (after Swedish lakes). It was an ambitious project that resulted in a very reliable engine, but for a small country there is a limit for what costs you can bear. In the long term it would have been untenable.

It will be interesting to see what parts of the defense industry Ukraine will retain. Sweden had its own jet engine program in the late 40’s and early 50’s. It was deemed too expensive and we went with a British alternative. But it actually still lives as a gas generator produced by Siemens.

Even a Ukrainian engine is possible. IIRC feasibility studies have been made on other engines than the RM12. Mainly I think they considered EJ200. But changing to two engines would alter the airframe and aerodynamic properties quite much. Probably not impossible but costly and not likely.

I find it more likely that Ukraine in the future could get a similar deal as Brazil with the existing Gripen E with, then doing such drastic modification as making it twin engined. Some modifications to fit Ukrainian requirements can most likely be made.
