As a doctor, people have asked me about news stories on pregnant women taking paracetamol.
So here's an explainer on everything from the known risks of untreated pain or fever in pregnancy, to the study in Sweden of 2.4m people and the important distinction between causation and correlation.

The evidence we have to date says *paracetamol does not cause autism* and, whatβs more, we have concrete evidence of the dangers of not taking paracetamol when it is needed.

Since my appearance on #BBCQT last week, which shortly followed news that the Government had plans to introduce mandatory digital ID cards, Iβve been asked for my views.
To be clear: I am against mandatory digital ID.
Hereβs why π

All eyes are on Rachel Reeves and the next Budget, now set to take place on November 26th.

βοΈ What happens next?
Suffice to say, Govt appears to have backed itself into a corner.
The economy isnβt growing, the Chancellor has made promises not to increase borrowing or raise taxes, and the Prime Minister may not be in a position to pass legislation on spending cuts.
Why is this relevant now? It raises questions about the Governmentβs ability to pass measures which may be unpopular with some of its MPs, such as cutting public spending.
23.09.2025 16:17 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0However, as you may recall, there was concern from across the House about the impact of the proposed changes. In the end, the Government U-turned and decided to remove the controversial proposals.
23.09.2025 16:17 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0If sheβs sticking to her promises not to increase borrowing or raise taxes, and the economy is not growing, the remaining option is to cut spending...
Earlier this year, the Government attempted to pass legislation which would have reduced the welfare bill by Β£5bn.
βοΈ What does this mean for you?
Rachel Reeves previously promised she would not be "coming back with more borrowing or more taxes", but how likely is this?
As Iβve said recently, the Chancellor is running out of options.
When the Government was elected last year, the message from the Prime Minister and Chancellor, in their own words, was that growing the economy was their βnumber one priorityβ.
But, as I β and many others β have repeatedly warned, you canβt tax your way to growth.
βοΈ Why are food prices rising?
The BBC writes that βEconomists said food bills have been rising because supermarkets were passing on government increases in the minimum wage and National Insurance Contributions (NIC) to shoppers through higher prices.β
Today, we learn that the UK is facing the highest level of inflation of any major economy this year.
This follows last weekβs news that food prices have been rising for five months in a row, at an annual rate of 5.1%.

The last Budget affected hospices significantly. It's something I've been raising and will continue to do so in my role.

It was good to speak to patients and staff to see the value of hospice services, something I saw first-hand during my days as a GP, and look at now from a policy perspective as an MP.

Today was a chance, as local MP but more importantly as Shadow Health Minister responsible for hospices, to visit @LOROSHospice and see all they good work they do for people who are dying and their families.

Today, I continue to try to understand why Labour didn't challenge the Chagos judgment in the court.
I also asked the Minister why this Government is - according to its own Actuary Department (www.the-independent.com/news/uk/home...) - happy to pay Mauritius Β£30bn over 99 years.
There is uncertainty around the Budget and whether Rachel Reeves -to fill a Β£50bn black hole of the Government's own creation- will borrow more, cut spending or increase taxes... we'll find out in October / November.

People are having to look elsewhere for extra hours or seek new jobs altogether. But with unemployment up 10% and job openings falling by -5.8%, people are struggling and being forced to look towards the State for support (an increase of 500,000 people under this Government).
