I was kind of meh after season one of WoT... I started watching Season 2 last week and now I'm through Season 3... holy shit did they start cooking near the end of S2! Season 3 was a complete banger. LFG for a Season 4! #RenewWOT Ha, buying the books on Audible now

But, they truly believed in me and my colleagues to figure it out and gave us the leeway to work through it, which we did. I'll always appreciate that level of trust when I needed it the most.

One lesson I learned the hard way: I ride or die on 9000+ MTUs, no matter the design.

And, the personal lesson.

The management team could have pulled the plug on this project. They could have doubted what we were building.

Over the next two weeks we tested with jumbo packets across these new 9200 MTU links; the server guys were amazed at how much data they could now move going from 1Gb to 2 x 10Gb LAGs.

We setup a follow up maintenance window a few weeks later and successfully cut over the network.

Well, except maybe having to put your tail between your legs and to apologize to your team for the wasted effort.

The problem was the MTUs on the point-to-point links in the new routed network. We had kept them the default - and low and behold - VMotions require 1600+ bytes to operate correctly.

We double checked the VMWare functionality and found that VMotions were not working.

There is nothing worse than moving all of the physical connections in a data center and having to move it back.

The old network adage of "it's pinging, so we're good, right?!" was in full affect.

But - sometimes in networking you get the sneaking suspicion that it's isn't working as you expect...

We moved the servers and whole subnets from the legacy network to the new network. I could see the gateways start to originate on the new network and the VPLS instances came online. We physically migrated the servers from the blades of the old the network onto the fan out switches of the

connecting it to the new ring, and testing various IP schemas and against regular servers, as we didn't have a testing VMWare environment.

I felt comfortable with the testing, as we had gone over our cutover goals multiple times.

We scheduled a maintenance window and began our work.

Lab 6 is an MPLS / VPLS, active / active configuration for redundancy between two discrete data centers.

The goal was to provide a redundant VMWare environment and facilitate VMotions over this L2 VPLS construct, rather than over a spanned VLAN.

I spent weeks mocking up the design,

The design of Labs 5-7 brought back a memory of a time when I completely failed, but had the trust of management to push forward.

Back in the day, we didn't have tools like Containerlab, EVE-NG, or Nvidia Air, to mock and prepare for certifications.

I have seen networks that were Gordian knots of complexity because engineers wanted to see "can I do this?" rather than asking "should I do this?"

Engineer: "We had a guy who was working on his CCIE and he used our network to study for the test"
Me: "Why don't you guys move away from this?"
Engineer: "It's too much of a pain and management doesn't see the value in it"

First and foremost: don't be that guy!

And,

on that day, I was seeing something that I had never seen on an enterprise network. I had only ever seen this on an ISP-level X-cert.

Me: "Are you using BGP Confederation on your campus?"
Engineer: "Yeah"
Me: "Why?!"

About 10 years ago I was working with the lead of a large university and was watching them deploy a new SVI and VLAN in their environment.

Now, at that point in my career, I had seen most types of deployed technologies: from legacy T1s, ATM, SONET, and all of the major routing protocols.

I was telling this story the other day, and I figured it would also make a good post. The gist is "your corporate network is not your lab."
