Feds in military gear flood downtown Chicago; top border official says arrests based on 'how they look' The immigration agents were spotted making arrests in downtown Chicago and River North neighborhood early Sunday.

In which a top US Border Patrol official, incredibly, tells my tall and Anglo colleague @chipmitchell1.bsky.social that he's not the type they're looking for as they go about downtown Chicago arresting people based on "how they look"

it's absolutely unsettling to realize how long the legislature has been so dysfunctional that people assume the Supreme Court ruling on whether the Constitution guarantees something forecloses any other action

"Just the other day, I was in the audience at Lincoln Center when Justice Amy Coney Barrett said, while promoting a new book, that she doesn't think the United States is in a constitutional crisis," Farias told us. "Today, the Supreme Court, without offering a single line of reasoning, more or less declared that the Fourth Amendment, which protects everyone from unreasonable searches and seizures, nonetheless allows the Trump Administration to arrest and detain anyone who looks Latino, citizen or not, on account of the language that they speak or the kind of jobs they do. The ruling putatively covers the Los Angeles area, but the effect could be national," he continued.

The New Yorker asked me “how bad” today’s Supreme Court ruling was. I boiled it down to one paragraph:

Mainstream’s supporters believe the Labour government is struggling to communicate the coherent vision, policy and strategy needed to change the country. They acknowledge the huge electoral threat from the populist right in Reform UK and believe Starmer and his top team “seem lost and unprepared to develop and champion a popular left alternative”.

This (from: www.theguardian.com/politics/202...) seems correct. I'd add that I presently believe that the ultimate cause of this is that the leadership of the party rn are ideologically opposed to popular left-wing things, while also in genuine sympathy with anti-trans and anti-immigrant sentiment.

Honestly, this may be one of the most important media graphs I've ever seen.

The claim: Democrats keep using annoying words.
The data: Republicans CLAIMS Democrats use them, which then becomes the narratives.

Then centrists attack DEMS for things GOPer CLAIM they say, not GOP for making stuff up.

LA city government remains one big HOA, more concerned with protecting wealthy elites from apartments than solving homelessness, overcrowding, and rent burden. Glad to (mostly) see socialists in office vote against the city's opposition to SB 79 and support apartments near transit.

Everyone should notice how a relatively conservative (by the standard of universities, which ofc heavily lean liberal) public university is thus far putting up more of a fight than nearly any of the private universities Trump has targeted.

Public universities are structurally better at this.

I spent a night in a field an hour outside Kitchener getting an up-close look at the worm industry. Our tiny corner of the province exports all of North America's bait worms: it's a curious business run by families and powered by immigrant labour, and every fact I learned enchanted me a little more🪱

There are at least 900,000 undocumented immigrants in Los Angeles County alone.

After a full month of largescale immigration operations which sent extraordinary fear through whole communities and caused measurably drops in school and work attendance, DHS says it has arrested under 2,800 of them.
