IMH's Martina Berggren presented a paper to the European Social Science History conference in Leiden (NL).
Martina's talk centred on the Swedish Blue Star organisation and the broadening of military labour to include animals - "Four legged soldiers" as a 1942 Swedish military source named them.
I know :/ It caused widespread outrage at home, especially among the soldiers, that the dogs were left behind after the war. But at least it led to a chain of reforms in how military dogs are treated today 🐕

Message from the front! During WWII, army dog Dolly served as a messenger dog on the border between Finland & Sweden. Dolly's handler regularly sent letters home to her owners, sharing updates about her well-being and performance. The two below are written on birch bark, 1944!
